How Can I Be Sure
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How can I be sure in a world that's constantly changing?
How can I be sure where I stand with you?

Whenever I, whenever I am away from you
I wanna die 'cause you know I wanna stay with you.
How do I know? Maybe you're trying to use me.
Flying too high can confuse me. Touch me but don't take me down.
Whenever I, whenever I am away from you
My alibi is telling people I don't care for you.
Maybe I'm just hanging around with my head up upside down.
It's a pity, I can't seem to find someone who's as pretty
and lovely as you.

How can I be sure? I really really really wanna know.
I really really really wanna know. Oh.

How can I be sure in a world that's constantly changing?
How can I be sure? I'll be sure with you.

Overall Meaning

Dusty Springfield's song "How Can I Be Sure" is a contemplative ballad with lyrics that express the doubt and uncertainty of a person's emotions in a world that is constantly changing. The lyrics seem to grapple with the question of trust in a relationship, particularly with someone who is not always present. The first line of the first verse, "How can I be sure in a world that's constantly changing?" sets the tone for the rest of the song, as the persona tries to come to terms with their own feelings.

In the chorus, the mood of the song shifts to a more desperate tone. The persona expresses their desire to stay with their loved one and not be taken down by their own emotions. The second verse reveals the persona's own insecurity and doubts about their relationship, questioning whether their partner is using them or not. The final lines of the song, "How can I be sure? I'll be sure with you" express a sense of hope for the future, and suggest that the persona's doubts will be eased when they are with their loved one.

It doesn't get any better than Dusty, she's world class and timeless, and always live no God damn lip since, RIP classy lady, so glad I grew up in her era singing all her hits

There are performances when she lipsynched, but I'm sure she wouold have preferred to sing live. The 1960s is, unfortunately, the time when tv folks starting worrying about perfection in sound and adopting the "we can't take the chance of something going wrong" way of thinking. As perfect as Dusty was in the studio, I'm always excited to find live tv appearances. I believe everything on her own tv show was sung live, but in these television specials, they sometimes went with the studio recording. For example, here's this same song, lip synched: https://youtu.be/bdBjKkw3pJw

The original is better but she is a great singer.

There will never be another singer like Dusty Springfield. She sings like an angel.

What a performer, such an artist, so elegant and classy; she seems so real at the same time. I came along in 1980. I feel like I missed so much, I'm still catching up.

Gary Jaffe

I'm 58 years old, and though I certainly knew Dusty's big hits while growing up, it wasn't until the late 1980's (when I was about 25 years old) when a friend had me focus on some of her lesser-known recordings that I began to see what an extraordinary artist she really was. She's now my favorite singer of all time. In terms of catching up, because she was a reluctant celebrity, and because she died young, although there is a large catalogue to explore, it's not "seemingly endless" like certain artists who recorded for 30-40 years. But, I know what you mean - there are the wonderful, iconic studio recordings to hear and study, and then there are all the television appearances to watch and enjoy (since she had her own show, there is a LOT of footage). I love coming on line and seeing all the love for Dusty. She was one singular sensation. https://youtu.be/TLpqQEPp3GU

Me, too.
I'm much older than you, and trust me:
The hunger that makes you feel the need to "catch up" never goes away.
