Morning Please Don't Come
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Morning please don't come
Surely you see that my lover is sleeping
Morning please don't come
Let the night linger on
When the stars have left the sky
We must say fond goodbye

Make the night a little longer
Morning please don't come
Starshine glow a little stronger
Morning please don't come
Day don't break for you will take
My love away from me
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come

Sing sweet nightingale
Sing me a song of a night never-ending
Sing sweet nightingale
And I'll try to pretend
That tomorrow's nowhere near
And there's nothing to fear

Make the night a little longer
Morning please don't come
Starshine glow a little stronger
Morning please don't come
Day don't break for you will take
My love away from me
Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come

Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come

Try to hold back the sun
I beg you morning please don't come

Overall Meaning

In Dusty Springfield's song "Morning Please Don't Come," the singer is pleading with the morning to delay its arrival so that she can enjoy a little more time with her lover before he leaves. The lyrics are filled with a sense of urgency and desperation, as if the singer knows that the inevitable morning light will bring with it the end of her happiness. She begs for the stars to "glow a little stronger" and for the night to "linger on," reveling in the idea of a night "never-ending." The lyrics suggest that the singer is afraid of what the dawn will bring, and wants to hold onto her happiness for as long as possible.

The song is both musically and lyrically captivating, drawing the listener in with its melancholy melody and vivid imagery. The use of vivid sensory imagery, such as the "starshine" and the "sweet nightingale," creates a dream-like atmosphere that perfectly complements the theme of the song. The singer is lost in her own world, caught up in the beauty of the moment and the fear of what is to come.

I've always loved this record ever since it was released in 1969. It should have been a big hit but perhaps it was a little too gentle. A lovely record to relax to. Tom Springfield wrote some marvelous songs. Where is he now?

He will be 83 in July of 2017, so I guess he's just enjoying his retirement

Tom Springfield at his best. I eventually found the sheet music for this great song. What beautiful harmony from brother and sister! I cannot find any interview featuring the late Tom Springfield on the internet. I should have like to hear his thoughts on songwriting, Dusty, etc. The Seekers, especially, owed him a lot. He is gone, but certainly not forgotten by many admirers everywhere.

RIP Tom. Now reunited with Dusty.
