Windmills of Your Mind
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Round like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel
Like a snowball down a mountain, or a carnival balloon
Like a carousel that's turning running rings around the moon
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind
Like a tunnel that you follow to a tunnel of its own
Down a hollow to a cavern where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving in a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble someone tosses in a stream
Like a clock whose hands are sweeping past the minutes of its face
And the world is like an apple whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket, words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?
Lovers walking along a shore and leave their footprints in the sand
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Pictures hanging in a hallway and the fragment of a song
Half remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong?
When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair!
Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning on an ever spinning reel

As the images unwind, like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Windmills of Your Mind" are metaphorical and complex, and they describe the inner workings of a person's mind, emotions, and memories. The circular imagery used throughout the song, such as "Round like a circle in a spiral, Like a wheel within a wheel" and "Like the circles that you find in the windmills of your mind," represents the cyclical nature of thoughts and feelings. The windmills themselves are a symbol of the mind's ability to generate endless thoughts and ideas.

The song also explores the theme of nostalgia and the bittersweet nature of memory. It references the impermanence of time and the fleeting nature of life. The lines "Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?" and "When you knew that it was over you were suddenly aware, That the autumn leaves were turning to the color of her hair" suggest a sense of regret and loss.

Overall, "The Windmills of Your Mind" is a poetic reflection on the human mind and the ephemeral nature of existence.

"....Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?..."

The mysterious cosmic poetry, the evocation of a lost time....just takes your breath away..and leaves you wistful, filled with longing.
For me, this song brought up surreal images, like a Dali landscape , like a Magritte painting...the writing is so vividly visual. & romantic.
Maybe it was the 60s that brought about this mystical distillation of poetry, guitar, strings & Dusty Springfield's dreamy voice.
Thanks to all...for making our lives richer.

Many younger singers today need to listen to this record to see how to approach a song with emotion and skill. It's not about how high or loud you sing with all the vocal gymnastic you can muster! Dusty was very acutely aware of how to sell a song and lyric with feeling as she did throughout her life and career. Now sadly missed by all her many fans in the many parts of the World. 😪
