You've Got A Friend
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you're down and troubled
And you need some love and care
And nothing, nothing is going right
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest night

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend
You've got a friend

If the sky up above you
Grows dark and full of clouds
And that old cold north wind begins to blow
Just keep you head together
And call my name out loud
Soon you'll hear me knocking at you door

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come run run run run running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there

Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend
When people can be so cold
They'll hurt you, yes, and desert you
And take your soul if you let them
Oh, don't you let them

You just call out my name
And you know wherever I am
I'll come running to see you again
Winter, spring, summer or fall
All you have to do is call
And I'll be there
You've got a friend
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
You've got a friend
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
You've got a friend
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
You've got, you've got a friend
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
You've got a friend
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)

(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)
(You've got a friend, you've got, you've got a friend)

Shake it off.

I went up to a woman and started talking to her,
she was beautiful but somewhat too shy.
I said I got a magic trick to show her.
I held up a Magnum ice cream and then showed her
an old door key.
Then I told her 'I got a magic trick'

She looked at me and I looked at her.

Then I tapped the chocolate on the ice cream a
few times with the key to reveal the white ice cream
underneath. She looks at me and I look at her.

I'm not going to lie. I can relate to this woman's personal struggles, namely her religious conscience, profound sense of incompetence and rebellious in-the-moment attitude. But that's definitely not the sole reason to love Dusty. She recognized greatness, worked hard to add something to it and out a new creation - something original and outstanding. She was humble enough to recognize others' wonderful talent, yet bold enough to add her indelible mark to it. Her work is an inspiration for my existence. Work your arse off, then willingly take chances when you are truly worthy...then keep improving. Thank you, madame, for your example.
