You Don't Own Me
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys

And don't tell me what to do
And don't tell me what to say
And, please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display

'Cause, you don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down
'Cause I'll never stay

I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So, just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you

I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way that I want
To say and do whatever I please

And, don't tell me what to do, yeah
Don't, don't you tell me what to say
And, please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display

I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So, just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young

I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way that I want

Overall Meaning

The song You Don't Own Me by Dusty Springfield is an anthem of independence and strength, particularly for women. The lyrics convey a message that the singer is not just a possession or toy of someone else, and she demands to be treated as an independent individual. There is a sense of frustration behind the message that the singer is trying to convey, where she wants to be allowed to be herself without any limitations imposed by another person.

The repetition of the phrase "You don't own me" emphasizes the singer's point that she cannot be controlled or treated as an object of someone else's possession. She insists on being able to go out with other boys, and not having to be put on display as someone's trophy. The line "Don't try to change me in any way" resonates strongly with the idea that women were often expected to conform to certain societal expectations, and the singer is rejecting that notion.

The song’s message of feminism and empowerment resonated with many female listeners, and became an instant classic. It has been covered and sampled by various artists, and is often referenced as a symbol of female empowerment. The lyrics also serve as a reminder of the important strides that women have made in gaining equal rights and autonomy.

It's 2022, holds up beautifully. Almost 60 years later, the message of independence still rings true.

@John miller it sure does! My parents raised me on 50’s / 60’s music with the old school parenting of having respect for elders and others etc…I turned out alright and doing the same for my little one!

She was certainly one of the most popular British singers of the 1960s and was nicknamed The Queen of White Soul. Her real name, incidentally, was Mary O'Brien.
