Although Dwele has had somewhat of a short career as a commercially avaliable artist, he has a vast catalogue of material currently unreleased that die-hard fans revere as some of his best work, considerably superior to his material released as a signed artist that showcases the true depth of his artistic and diverse talent, displayed without constraint.
Gardner was raised on the west side of Detroit in a musical family. He played piano from the age of six, later taking up trumpet, bass and guitar. He was deeply affected by the fatal shooting of his father outside his home when he was age ten, later stating "I learned to put my emotions into music; it was my therapy."
He cites Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Roy Ayers, Miles Davis, and Freddie Hubbard as favorite artists, and took inspiration from hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, becoming an MC, and working with Slum Village. Gardner recorded a demo in his bedroom, called, The Rize, and sold it out of the trunk of his car. He had about 100 copies, which sold out within a week. He caught the ears of local heroes Slum Village and more specifically their world-renowned producer J Dilla. Slum Village invited Dwele to sing the hook of the song "Tainted" for their album Trinity (Past, Present and Future). It became an instant classic and led to more high profile work with female rapper Bahamadia, the all-star group Lucy Pearl and London's New Sector Movement. Dwele signed to Virgin Records in 2003, who released his debut album, Subject, which mixed neo soul and hip hop. In a 2005 review in The Independent, his style was summed up: "Dwele's rooted in vintage soul but isn't stuck in the past, overly reverential or an exercise in pastiche - there's a major hip-hop edge which betrays his original incarnation as a rapper." A second album, Some Kinda..., followed in 2005. He then later signed with RT Music Group and KOCH records in March, 2008. He is coming out with his fourth album titled, W.W.W. (W.ants. W.orld. W.omen) coming out June 29, 2010. Dwele was recently featured on the first single off of Kanye West's fifth studio album, Good Ass Job. The song was entitled "Power" and was leaked on May 28, 2010.

But I swear it seems like two years at least,
Whether face to face or over the phone,
When I hear your voice, I'm right at home
Your so beautiful, more than a man could ever want
Got me lookin' for, cameras to see if I'm getting punk'd
Tryin' to take it slow, ain't now sense in lying to me, or to myself
But truth be told, I think I love you
It's unexpected, out of the blue
But I gotta let you know
That I think I love you
The way you touch me,
The way you look,
Everything about you is so sexy
You do your own thing
You got your own money
Everything about you is so damn (it's so damn) beautiful.
Your so beautiful, more than a man could ever want
Got me lookin' for Ashton to see if I'm getting punk'd
Ain't no since in lying to you
Or to myself
I know it's early, I know it's soon
But truth be told, I think I love you
It's unexpected, out of the blue
But I gotta let you know
That I think I love you
I never felt this way so fast
(So fast about anyone) Real spit.
Hate to admit it but I got it bad
(I got it bad baby) but it's a good thing.
I know it's early, I know it's soon
But truth be told, I think I love you
It's unexpected, out of the blue
But I gotta let you know
That I think I love you
The lyrics to Dwele's "I Think I Love You" speak about a whirlwind romance that has shocked the singer. The song implies that heโs fallen very deep very quickly for the person heโs singing about; in less than a week, he believes that he's in love with her. The song highlights how infatuation can make one feel like theyโve known someone for longer than they actually have. The singer is so taken with the girl that everything about her is beautiful to him, and he can't get enough of her. Heโs honest in his lyrics, admitting heโs surprised by how fast heโs fallen yet he is unable to deny his feelings for her; this is really out of character for the singer. He's never felt such strong emotions for someone so quickly, and he's willing to explore his feelings for her. The last two lines in the song convey the urgency and sincerity of his feelings, as he admits that he thinks that he loves her.
The song's lyrics speak of romantic love that happens suddenly and unexpectedly, and the emotional roller coaster that comes with it. The song highlights the intensity of the feelings that come with falling in love and an admission to oneself that their love grew quickly, yet it is genuine. It's a testament to how love can sneak up on us, and before we know it, we are consumed by it. The use of the phrase "getting punk'd" is a pop culture reference to a TV show "Punk'd" that ran in the 2000s, where celebrities would play pranks on other celebrities. It shows how the singer feels a bit fooled by his own feelings and an almost in disbelief that he could be falling in love so quickly.
