The Depression recipes are sad. My mother grew up during the Depression. She told me they basically ate beans and macaroni and for a change of pace they'd have macaroni and beans. You were right about them eating dandelions. They ate the young greens in salad, the older greens cooked like spinach and she said some people ate the roots. Her mother would gather chicory roots. Wash, roast and grind them for a coffee substitute. Her entire family survived not just the Depression but the Spanish influenza epidemic a decade earlier. They lived in New York city, so it was a miracle.

My gran lived in Oklahoma also growing up in the Depression. And beans was a thing for them as well. In her adult life she could not even touch baked beans, string beans, peas, or black eyed peas. She told me they’d get to eat pancakes around once a month or every other month and they would get so excited. Other than that, she wouldn’t speak about it.

Jell-o is a brand and is fruit flavored. Gelatin is the thickener and is tasteless as is Aspic. All are basically collagen. I remember when a lot of things we put into gelatin (fruit base) or aspic (Meat base). Fruit salad good. Meat aspic bad!

Yeah, 60s and 70s. It was literally a staple of middle class cooking then. We had it for a third of our lunch and evening meals. The worst was the canned "mixed fruit" and Jello horror. Something horrible always happened to the grapes and if you used bananas they would go bad (turn black) almost immediately. We still make "Glorified Rice" with Jello every year for the holidays - it is a touch of nostalgia and I still love it. ;-)

My maternal grandmother was raising me through 3 coups (govt overthrow) in a foreign country without child support, while still raising her last child. There were baker's strikes, no running water for weeks on end, same for basic foodstuffs, earthquakes, etc. And she herself was a child of the Depression, the youngest of 5. Yet through it all she was extremely resourceful, kept her tiny general store open, or at least operating, and my uncle and myself fed and healthy, as well as her grand aunt and 1 employee under her care. I understand Dylan's fascination with these old recipes because they're also mine with my cooking since I was a kid. My grandma nvr learned to cook properly but during a baker's strike, how she got her hands on flour I'll nvr know, but she managed to "bake" very simple sweet breads for snacking with "coffee" using a dirt-filled bucket as a stove. She sold these, 3 for a local nickel, and ppl were so grateful for just having something sweet to eat in the midst of a frightening time.
Thank you, Dylan, for bringing the past to life in such a way that sad memories make me laugh out loud, and thank my lucky stars I had my grandma. ❤

The problem with bay leaves is that by the time you use them they've gone stale. Freshly dried they're so fragrant and beautiful, I highly recommend having a small bay tree and keep a small amount drying in your kitchen at all times, and once dry make stews and shit, bonus: your house will smell amazing the whole time

For anyone wondering, hardtack (the last clip) is a last resort sort of food that the soldiers could make and keep for weeks on end. They'd typically dip it in coffee to make the sludge taste better, or put it in 'soup' to give it some substance. It was not meant to be eaten dry. Although, in times of need, one could break a piece and suck on it until soft, then chew it like that.

My dad does Civil War reenactments, and will make hardtack to lend to the authenticity of the adventure. Also, 'visitors' (normies) like watching the 'soldiers' making food and coffee the way the soldiers did back then. And hardtack is part of that.

When you just hear the name, the baked bean pizza doesn't sound too bad, and at first it sounds like it's just gonna be like, a quick "pizza" with the biscuit crust and all that, but you figure that it's going to just be a normal pizza with a few spoonfuls of baked beans on top, which is a little unusual, but I could see how people might like it, since it'd be a little bit like cheesy beans on toast...then it says to use the whole can and you're filled with dread.

As someone who has inherited at least three generations of receipt files and books of cutout receipts, I can totally relate to some of these old dishes. Jell-O salads were a thing of my youth and meat extended dishes from my great grandmother when the Depression hit. I'm still trying to figure out some of those ingredients, such as 25cents of potato chips

In defense of the dump cake, I've really only seen those made in a dutch oven while camping, and that's a context where it's reasonable to emphasize using as few dishes as possible (and also tastes better when you've been hiking for 5 hours and are sitting around a campfire).

I've been collecting cookbooks for about 50 years, and my favorite, for its outdated everything, is the 1910 classic, "How To Please a Husband".
When my mother was married at the end of WW2, she was handed a paper bound cookbook after the ceremony in the courthouse. The judge actually gave it to her as soon as she said, "I Do". Scary.

I so clearly remember the multitude of jello salads from various potlucks in my youth. The most common was probably lime jello, cottage cheese, shredded cabbage and...wait for it...marshmallows. As a side note, I couldn't exist without bay leaves. I'm a soup girl. Dylan I'm new to your channel but I have to say you have one of the most wonderful and colorful personalities I've ever encountered. Never change and thank you for the content. Took me a minute. It finally sink in while I was taking a sip of water. Dang it!!! Sprayed water everywhere. Shit even thru my nose. I laughed so hard and long that my ribs hurt. And then the wheezing started. You know how difficult it is to use an inhaler while laughing in burst and looking at the water I I have to wipe off the wall???
Geez!!! Thanks Dylan! Great laugh. Ribs still hurt.

My mother just sautee the loving shiz out of it, ad onion and season it with salt and pepper, not a comfort food but ir is really easy to make.......maybe a little tough to the taste (the liver flavor and aroma is the only thing you will feel, the onion barely does something)

I was lucky/unlucky to be raised in the jello phase. They tried to serve that damn tuna jello with peas in it. We were required to eat everything on our tray so I shoved it in my milk carton and got caught. I got in trouble with the school as did several others. My parents were not upset with me because they thought it was gross too.
