Ring of Fire
Dylan-Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is a burnin' thing
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire, the ring of fire
And it burns, burns, burns

The ring of fire, the ring of fire
The ring of fire, the ring of fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ring of Fire, written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore, describe the intense passion and desire that love can ignite. The singer describes falling into a "burnin' ring of fire" that is fueled by their wild desire for someone else. Even as the flames get higher and higher, the singer is unable to resist the allure of this burning love.

Through the use of vivid metaphor, the lyrics suggest that love can be both an ecstatic and a dangerous state. The "ring of fire" imagery suggests that love can be like a raging inferno that can bring both pleasure and pain. Despite the risks, however, the singer is willing to "go down, down, down" into the flames for the sake of the person they love.

The final verse of the song suggests that even though the singer knows that this love can be consuming and unpredictable, they are unable to resist it. There is a sense of inevitability to this love, as if the couple is fated to be consumed by the fire that they themselves have ignited.

When Cash and Dylan sing together it's like living at the same time in two different amazing worlds.

Ja so fühle ich es auch, diese beiden sind jeder für sich ein Kern in sich und eine Frucht für sich und doch irgendwie gemeinsam. Danke dafür

Well said ❤

I love how their voices and their guitar playing are totally different to each other's, but it all sounds amazing when brought together.

My brothers and I are a direct result. Mom was Wasp from Boston to Manhantville in 69, Dad was 13 years older Italian sanitation worker from NY. It was Dillon and Cash and the like that made me and my bros, plus kids and grandkids, all possible.

Knew a lot about Johnny Cash but never knew about his friendship with Bob Dylan. Love this. My dad who passed away last year at 92 years old, loved this song and loved Johnny Cash. Maybe they're now singing together in Heaven
