Schneider was a fan of pop music and hip hop when he was a child, but later he was attracted to the narrative aspect of country music and began singing at age 14. After meeting Brett Eldredge at a concert in the singer's hometown (Paris, Illinois), Schneider was invited to the stage by Eldredge to perform a song during the latter's performance at Terre Haute. He then began writing and playing songs in both Indiana and Nashville, Tennessee. Between 2014 and 2016, Schneider published a series of videos on YouTube of him making versions of popular country songs, which earned him attention online. Hometown Heartless

Same four-way buckshot, stop sign by your house
Still drivin' that same ol' beat up Chevrolet
It is, it is, it is, but it ain't the same
No it ain't the same
We painted all the memories, girl on every corner
Every back street, feel it all over
Now I can't go back, can't see my momma
Can't get past us, even if I wanna
I know they said home is where the heart is
But you left this hometown heartless, heartless, heartless
Wrecked havoc downtown on that July Friday night
With nothing but a kiss and a dress with a half-filled whiskey smile
You took the best this place could give girl, when you left
Yeah you dropped this town like a rearview cigarette
Can't forget
How we painted all the memories, girl on every corner
Every back street, feel it all over
All the history just ain't right around here, without you next to me
Now I can't go back, can't see my momma
Can't get past us, even if I wanna
I know they said home is where the heart is
But you left this hometown heartless, heartless, heartless
You left this hometown heartless, heartless, heartless
Same gravel I kicked, same parking lot fights
Same red-brick bar, same neon signs
Same everything here, but without you it don't feel like mine
Painted all the memories, girl on every corner
Every back street, feel it all over
All the history just ain't right around here, without you next to me
Now I can't go back, can't see my momma
Can't get past us, even if I wanna
I know they said home is where the heart is
But you left this hometown heartless, heartless, heartless
Yeah you left this hometown heartless, heartless, heartless
Dylan Schneider's song "Hometown Heartless" tells the story of a man who is haunted by memories of his ex-girlfriend every time he returns to his hometown. The opening lines of the song establish a sense of repetition, as he describes how the same landmarks and landmarks continue to appear along his four-mile radius. Despite this familiarity, the man still feels a sense of emptiness because he is now alone, having lost the person who made this town feel like home.
The lyrics make use of vivid imagery, painting a picture of a place filled with memories of the couple's past. Everywhere he looks, he sees reminders of his former love, making it impossible to move on. The man reflects on a night where he and his ex-girlfriend wreaked havoc downtown with "nothing but a kiss and a dress with a half-filled whiskey smile," highlighting the intensity of their bond. The chorus emphasizes this sense of loss, as he admits that he cannot go back to his hometown and see his mother or interact with any aspect of his life, because everything is so intertwined with the memories he shared with his ex-girlfriend.
Overall, "Hometown Heartless" is a moving song that captures the painful experience of trying to move on from a past love, especially when memories are so inextricably linked to a specific place.
