The Story
Dylan Wheeler Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No need to straighten out your makeup
Girl, you know, you′re sure enough beautiful tonight
So let's leave the lights on
I wanna see your miracle, you′re beautiful, tonight

I know I made you feel a little less
Fall in my arms, get it off your chest
'Cause that was him, this is me
And this is you, and us is we
Our story begins tonight

It's our story to write
Two worlds dance on a page
′Cause oh, I
We do it always, forever and always
′Til the end of our days
So tonight, it's our story to write

One and two, few mistakes
Just enough to give your heart a break
Baby, please don′t you cry
Look at how far we've come
A love like this can′t be undone
Sweetheart, I need you to try

I know I made you feel a little less
Fall in my arms, get it off your chest
'Cause that was him, this is me
And this is you, and us is we
Our story won′t end tonight

It's our story to write
Two worlds dance on a page
'Cause oh, I
We do it always, forever and always
To the end of our days
So tonight, it′s our story to write

A hundred pages in, I′ve written lines
That I wish I could unwrite
They're far from beautiful
The character I′ve become
Is the one I try to save you from
I stole the light from your beautiful

I know I've made you feel much more than less
In her arms, I confess
That was him, this is me
This is you, is "us" still "we"?
Our story can′t end tonight

It's our story to write
Two worlds break on a page
In all odds, heading in separate ways
It was forever and always
The end of our days
Not tonight
Not tonight
Not tonight

Not tonight
Not tonight

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Story," Dylan Wheeler speaks about the power of personal stories, particularly of two people who have come together to start their own story. He tells his partner that they do not need to worry about their appearance because he finds her beautiful even when she is not trying to look good. He then assures her that they can let their guard down and that she can speak her mind. Wheeler then contrasts who his partner is with what has happened to her, specifically referencing a past lover who made her feel bad about herself. He then encourages his partner to try and work through whatever pain she is feeling instead of crying.

In the second verse, Wheeler apologizes for any previous mistakes he has made in the relationship and suggests that their history has helped them create something great together. However, he later expresses some doubt and regret over certain aspects of the story they are writing. He worries about himself as a person and the negative influence he might have on his partner. The song ends with him questioning what the future holds for their relationship and whether their story is truly over.
