The Distance

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The lyrics to E-Town Concrete's song The Distance highlight the vast disparities that exist within modern society. The song makes a commentary on the various struggles that people face in their everyday lives, from financial hardship to matters of life and death. The opening lines draw a clear contrast between those who are financially secure, fighting to maintain their wealth, and those who are struggling to make ends meet. The song then goes on to address broader societal issues, such as the divide between those who question the actions of their government and those who blindly support war efforts.
As the song progresses, it becomes clear that there are divides along various lines, such as race, religion, class, education, sexual orientation, and political affiliation. These divisions create a distance between people that only seems to grow over time. In the end, the lyrics suggest that this distance is insurmountable, that people will never truly bridge their differences and come to understand one another. The song is a poignant reminder that while we may all be part of the same society, our experiences and perspectives can be vastly different, making true understanding and empathy difficult to achieve.
