Cry Me A River
E. Lyrics

Yeah, yup I heard it
Chef, man what up

Ay yo money like floyd, and swagger like puff
That's what's up
You fuck with them big girls? yup
Had Ghostface "all I got is you" on
I knew i had to move on
This light, red-bone bitch, it grew on me
I know you're rich, few kids, live in the cliffs
All I see is fly gear, and hourly spiffs
That's what it is
Clean brim, Louies was thin
Glasses on, she mastered niggas, misses Slim
At the crib, I'm at her rest cooking
Then came the negligée, Rae stop looking
Left on the stove yo, came over, slammer was rock
She threw it in her mouth, good looking out
Chill for a sec, my real boo, yo, smooth as a tank
That's why I buy her more shit, I'm feelin' the sex
This my nigga, long time gangsta
?

You don't have to lie to me
You can cry to me
You're the only one I let see this side of me
So give me your heart
This is my promise
For you
Ask what I'll be when I'm older

And I'll be your man
And you'll be my woman
And you'll understand
We could be open

You can cry to me
When we're making love
You can cry to me
Girl, if it's too much

You don't have to hide from me
I know its frightening
It's clear as day, but it still feels like night to me
So give me your heart
Baby, I'll light it
For you
Ask what you'll see when it's over

And you'll see a man
And I'll see my woman
You'll understand
We could be open

You can cry to me
When we're making love
You can cry to me
Girl, if it's too much

You can cry to me
When we're making love

You can cry to me
Girl, if it's too much

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of E.'s song Cry Me a River seem to be about an affair with another woman. E. seems to be describing a relationship with a light-skinned woman who is rich and has a few kids, and he is taken by her "fly gear" and hourly "spiffs." He mentions cooking with her and spending time at her crib before his "real boo" calls him back. In the chorus, the lyrics take on a more romantic tone, with E. telling a woman that she doesn't have to hide from him and that she can cry to him, even during lovemaking. He promises to be there for her and lights her heart. He ends by singing that they can be "open."

The verses of the song seem to be describing a complicated relationship that E. has with two women. He seems to be drawn to the other woman's money and material possessions but ultimately comes back to his "real boo." However, the chorus suggests that he is willing to be emotionally available to this woman and support her through whatever trials she is facing. The title of the song, Cry Me a River, has been interpreted as both a challenge for the woman to be vulnerable with him as well as a nod to the classic breakup song of the same name by Justin Timberlake.

Letra:

You were my sun
You were my earth
But you didn't know all the ways I loved you, no
So you took a chance
And made other plans
But I bet you didn't think that they would come crashing down, no

You don't have to say, what you did
I already know, I found out from him
Now there's just no chance
For you and me
There'll never be
And don't it make you sad about it?

You told me you love me
Why did you leave me all alone?
Now you tell me you need me
When you call me on the phone
Girl, I refuse
You must have me confused with some other guy
The bridges were burned
Now it's your turn, to cry

Cry me a river
Cry me a river
Cry me a river
Cry me a river (yeah, yeah)

You know that they say that some things are better left unsaid
And it wasn't like you only talked to him and you know it
Don't act like you don't know it
And all of these things people told me
Keep messin' with my head (messin' with my head)
Should've picked honesty

Scott Storch did some of the lyrics, the bridge and the melody on Cry Me a River, the beat and rest of production was Timbaland. Storch is not credited as a producer, which is why he never made any Justin Timberlake songs after Cry Me a River, and him and Timbaland fell out over it.

That kind of made him lose his career. Well, that and a crippling cocaine addiction that saw him lose his fortune, which is really sad.

I respect Storch and his work, but I sort of feel like amending my comment on Timberlake to include Storch would be like giving credit to Storch for D.R.E. Day because he wrote the piano riff.

Don't get me wrong, the piano riff made the song, it is among the most recognizable components of Dre's songs, up there with the vocoder on California Love.

That said, it is like 2% of the work that went into the song, while his work on Cry Me a River was more like 25% of the song. So he definitely deserves credit with Timberlake.

But to put Storch up there as, "The one who made Timberlake's beats"... Idk. That title belongs to Timbaland imo.
