E.G. Daily signed with A&M Records in 1985, and released her debut album Wild Child. A year later in 1986 the dance/pop single Say It, Say It was released. The song only made it to #70 on Billboard Hot 100, but claimed the #1 spot on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. Her songs Shake It Up and I'm Hot Tonight were included in the soundtrack to the film Scarface. Those same songs were later included in the lineup of fictional radio station Flashback 95.6 in the Grand Theft Auto III video game. She also appeared in Better Off Dead where she sang the title song.

I'd sell my soul to find one more drink left in that bottle
They say that I'm worthless, that all hope for me is gone
Heaven help me; trying to beat the morning home
Lord, don't let the daylight show the shame that's on my face
Just let me hide in my disgrace (Just let me hide in my disgrace)
She won't ask where, where I've been or why I'm drinking
She knows it's hopeless, but she keeps hanging on
Heaven help me; (heaven help me) trying to beat the morning home
Lord, I know I've tried, many times before
But this time I really mean it, so help me
Trying to beat the morning home
The lyrics to E.G. Daily's song Trying paint a picture of a person struggling with alcohol addiction. The singer is drunk and alone, unable to find help from anyone. They are so desperate for another drink that they would even sell their soul to get it. The people around them have given up hope and labeled them as worthless, but they continue to try and beat their addiction.
The second verse reveals that the singer has a woman waiting for them, but she is resigned to their situation and doesn't bother asking where they've been or why they are drinking. Despite her acceptance, the singer is still trying to beat their addiction and make it home before morning comes and exposes their shame.
The chorus plea to the lord to hide their shame and help them beat their addiction is a common theme in songs about addiction. The singer acknowledges that they have tried many times before to kick their habit but this time they really mean it and are asking for divine intervention to help them succeed.
Overall, the song is a powerful depiction of the struggles that come with addiction and the constant battle to overcome it.
