Crossroads
EC and Steve Winwood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went down to the crossroads
Tried to flag a ride
I went down to the crossroads
Tried to flag a ride
Nobody seemed to know me
Everybody passed me by

I went down to the crossroads
Fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroads
Fell down on my knees
Ask the Lord above for mercy
Save me if you please

I am going down to Rosedale
Taking my rider by my side
I am going down to Rosedale
Take my rider by my side
You can still barrelhouse, baby
They call us on the riverside

You can run, you can run
Go and tell my friend-boy Willie Brown
You can run, you can run
Go and tell my friend-boy Willie Brown

And I'm standing at the crossroads
I believe I'm sinking down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song “Crossroads” by Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood are a combination of two blues songs namely “Cross Road Blues” by Robert Johnson and “Traveling Riverside Blues” by Johnson as well. The singer of the song has reached a crossroads in his life from where he wants to start afresh but doesn't know which direction to go. He is trying to flag a ride but nobody seems to know him and everyone passes him by. So, he falls down on his knees and asks the Lord above for mercy and hopes to be saved by him. In the next section, he talks about going down to the town of Rosedale, along with his lover while still trying to figure out which way to go.

The chorus of the song is the most significant part of the song "You can run, you can run, go and tell my friend-boy Willie Brown, and I'm standing at the crossroads, I believe I'm sinking down." The singer knows that he is standing at the crossroads, and he feels like he's sinking down into despair. This line is an expression of the hopelessness and lack of direction he feels in his life. The song has a spiritual undertone and speaks to the conflicts and desires of the human soul. In essence, the song is a depiction of the internal struggle between good and evil, as well as the constant desire for redemption.

This is the best version of Crossroads! Love Steve Winwood on the piano and Eric on guitar. I could listen to this all night!

I love how Winwood grabbed his guitar by mistake and just put it down and went back to the piano. amazing that he's so good at both instruments. I didn't realize he was proficient at the guitar as well until about 5 years ago.

Ethan Grober

Love the retro intro - circa Derek and the Dominoes Live the Fillmore

Great stuff. Hearing Winwood sing Crossroads with Clapton's guitar is like a dream of the way it could have been way back when. Both have had great careers, but the combo was/is true magic.
