Shooting Up In Vain
Eagle-Eye Cherry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waking up as the sun goes down
Body all in pain
Straight out the door to the worst part of town
Shooting up in vain

Slips all his money to the man
Here we go again....here we go again
Got bags of mercy in the palm of his hand
Shooting up in vain

CHORUS:
So he heads for the closest rooftop
And now he's free with the skyline begind
But it won't be long until his high will drop
Then you know what he'll try to find
Such a shame

Now he's back on that hunt for more
Body all in pain
Wanting to get back to where he was before
Shooting up in vain
So now he goes and sells his wedding ring
Here we go again......here we go again
But now he's sold exactly everything
Shooting up in vain

CHORUS

Such a shame

Down to the bed as the sun goes up
Body all in pain
Now he swears he's going to stop
Shooting up in vain
He's Dr. Jekyll and he's Mr. Hyde
He's got to listen to that voice deep inside
Got a one-way ticket on a derailed train
Got a one-way ticket on a derailed train
Shooting up in vain
Such a shame
Such a shame

Got a one-way ticket on a derailed train

Got to stop shooting up in vain.............(REPEAT)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eagle-Eye Cherry's "Shooting Up in Vain" are about a person who is addicted to drugs and the things he does to feed his addiction. At the beginning of the song, the person is waking up as the sun goes down, indicating that he has been up all night and possibly indulged in drugs. The body is in pain, which is one of the side-effects of drug addiction. The person heads straight out the door to the worst part of town to shoot up, which shows that he is not concerned about his safety or well-being.

The person slips all his money to the drug dealer and shoots up in vain. The drug addict knows that it won't be long before his high ends, which is why he heads for the closest rooftop where he can feel free with the skyline behind. However, he knows that it won't last, and 'such a shame.'

The person goes back on the hunt for more drugs, and his body is in pain, so he sells his wedding ring, showing the extent to which he is willing to go to feed his addiction. He knows he has a one-way ticket on a derailed train and needs to listen to the voice deep inside him to stop shooting up in vain. The song is an intense, emotional track that raises awareness about the dangers of drug addiction.
