1.Earl Gra… Read Full Bio ↴There are more than one artists with the name "Earl Gray"
1.Earl Gray - songwriter/singer
Already known in the blues community as the former front man of rockabilly blues act Voodoo Soup, 23 year old Graeme Pillemer has been spending his off-days nutting out his solo-project Earl Gray. In the songs that will make up his first release, Graeme has drawn on his diverse range fo influences to create a sound that combines the best of old school blues and roots aesthetics with elements of contemporary soul and a hint of hip hop.
To help achieve this Graeme sought out producer and multi-instrumentalist Tony Buchen (aka Buchman) whose whork with The Baggsmen, Kid Confucius, Vassy, Andy Bull and Lior made him uniquely equiped for the job. Their collaboration proved to be such a success that Graeme went ahead and completed a five-track EP with Tony (which was released in September 2005), and has already started pre-production with him on a debut album.
On stage Earl Gray is a contradiction of sorts. As "The Earl" he prances around on stage with a swagger that may border on bravado. Yet at the same time he never quite stops being "Gray", the somewhat awkward and sensitive young manwho isn't all at ease with being the centre of attention. It's as if a young Woody Allen was blessed with the voice and charisma of an even younger Dr John.
Backed by an incredible supporting band, Earl Gray is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the hottest acts around. He has done regular supports for some of the best young acts in the country such as Tim Freedman, Lior, Mia Dyson and Josh Pyke. With tracks from his debut EP going to medium and high rotation respectivally on Triple J, the future is very bright for Gray.

The Lick
Earl Gray Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
The lyrics of Earl Gray's song, The Lick, seem to be open to interpretation, as the song is primarily instrumental. However, one could argue that the repetition of the titular "lick" could represent a cycle or pattern, both in music and in life. Throughout the song, there are various musical intervals and changes in tempo, which could be seen as a metaphor for the ups and downs of life. The layers of instrumentation build on top of each other, creating a sense of intensity and progression.
It's possible that the lyrics "thank you ladies and gentlemen" at the end of the song are meant to represent the end of a performance, as if the musicians are thanking their audience. This could also be seen as a nod to the jazz tradition of acknowledging the audience at the end of a set.
Overall, the lyrics of The Lick may be minimal, but the music itself tells a story of growth and change, with various musical motifs representing different aspects of the journey.

Had this tune on The Future Funk compilation CD. Whole album was awesome and my way into things like Drum and Bass and people like Aphex Twin. Hearing it again on the 1st of Jan 2012, it still sounds as good as it did some 17 years ago when I was just a wee boy getting high with my pals! Awesome share, thank you very much!

Tune! Haven't heard this for a long time. Never heard it all by itself like this, but in its day The Lick was one of those essentials a DJ would use to construct an atmospheric set. Seem to remember playing the other side of this a lot too. Thanks asterio.
