Dreamin'
Earl Klugh/George Benson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day
I'd be safe and warm
If I was in L.A.

California dreaming
On such a winter's day

Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray
You know the preacher like the cold
He knows I'm gonna stay

All the leaves are brown
And the sky is grey
I've been for a walk
On a winter's day

If I didn't tell her
I could leave today

Overall Meaning

"Dreamin'" is a song by Earl Klugh and George Benson that depicts a man who is California dreaming on a winter’s day. The opening verse “All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey” sets an imagery of a melancholic or nostalgic feeling, perhaps a longing for warmth and sunshine amidst dreary weather. The singer wishes to be in Los Angeles where it is safe and warm, highlighting the allure of the city’s perfect climate and glamour.

The song also touches on religious faith, as the singer stops into a church where he pretends to pray, but in reality, he is seeking warmth from the cold. The preacher knows he will stay, and the line “If I didn’t tell her, I could leave today” suggests that he may be running away from someone or something, or that he cannot leave until he tells her something important.

Overall, “Dreamin’” is a song that deals with wanderlust, longing, and escape, with its soothing jazz melody and the harmonious combination of Klugh’s and Benson’s guitars adding to the song’s calming effect.

I am a mostly a fan of heavy metal, but the “collaboration” album by George and Earl has to be in my top-5 favorite albums of all time. I’ve listened and enjoyed so so many times. Never gets old!

Late 80s, when Ibanez guitars got really popular, I always got a copy of their yearly catalog.
The strat types always looked cool and had great pickups, etc.
But there were always the George Benson signature models, and two things were undeniable: First, I wanted one. Second, even though I was a huge fan, it spoke to how much impact he had.
And Ibanez still makes them.
