We'll Meet Again Sweetheart
Earl Scruggs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The time has come to say goodbye
I'm asking you to please don't cry
The time to me won't be so long
To know you're happy back at home

Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
We'll meet and never more to part
Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
Don't cry, so please don't break my heart

So goodbye now, don't be blue
Try to be happy and be true
And remember what I say
Sweetheart, we'll meet again someday

Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
We'll meet and never more to part
Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
Don't cry, so please don't break my heart

Oh, sweetheart I'm leaving now
Yes, I'll soon be on my way
Each night upon my knees I'll pray
Sweetheart, we'll meet again someday

Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
We'll meet and never more to part
Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
Don't cry, so please don't break my heart

Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
We'll meet and never more to part

Someday we'll meet again sweetheart
Don't cry, so please don't break my heart

Overall Meaning

Earl Scruggs's song We'll Meet Again Sweetheart is a song about the pain and heartbreak of leaving someone you love behind. The opening lines of the song, "The time has come to say goodbye / I'm asking you to please don't cry," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is clearly torn between leaving and staying with the person he loves. He asks her not to cry, but it's obvious that he is hurting too.

The chorus, "Someday we'll meet again sweetheart / We'll meet and never more to part," suggests that this separation is not the end of their relationship. The singer is hopeful that they will be reunited someday and that their love will continue to grow. The repetition of this chorus is also significant - it emphasizes that this message is the most important part of the song. Even though they are separating now, the singer and his sweetheart will be together again someday.

Throughout the song, the singer tries to stay positive and encouraging. He urges his sweetheart to be happy and true while he is gone, and he promises to think of her and pray for her every night. The final line, "Don't cry, so please don't break my heart," is a plea for her to be strong and to trust that they will be reunited someday.

Overall, Earl Scruggs's song We'll Meet Again Sweetheart is a touching and emotional tribute to the enduring nature of love. Despite the pain and heartbreak of separation, the singer remains hopeful that he and his sweetheart will be together again someday.

Just think of this on today’s equipment. This is awesome. Thanks for sharing!

Take note you amateurs that claim you are professionals. This is how it's done!! It's not blazing fast or cram as many notes as you can into it. It's not everyone trying to showboat for attention. It's a TEAM effort. It's a finely tuned machine that requires each part to do it's job in order to help all the other parts do their jobs, thus creating a great final product. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yep Earl is the godfather of the 5 string. It seems like today that everyone learned ant what he invented and came up with natural. Most of what's done today is copied from him.

@redlinemando

@@weldonpinder7295 Your completely right except that Earl didn't invent it. He took pieces of the techniques used by Snuffy Jenkins, Don Reno & a few others & blended them together. He did however, perfect it, put his own brand on it & then, make it world famous. The banjo would have likely vanished into obscurity if not for the talent & notoriety of Mr. Scruggs!!!!!!!

@ojnabsekil6531

How right you are 😎

@1930Granada

@@redlinemando I forget who it was who said this, but it was something along the lines of "3-finger banjo has been around since at least the 1840s, but if it wasn't for Earl Scruggs, we wouldn't be worried about who invented it."

@redlinemando

@@1930Granada I don't know who said it either, but it was a very true statement indeed!!!!!!!

Yea every note means something & makes sense.He's not just hitting melody notes then rolls to get to the next one.Even the roll means something ,if you listen enough. Took me many yrs and counting to realize this.
