After The Love Is Gone
Earth Wind & Fire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For a while, to love was all we could do
We were young and we knew, and our eyes were alive
Deep inside we knew our love was true
For a while we paid no mind to the past
We knew love would last
Every night somethin' right
Would invite us to begin the dance
Somethin' happened along the way
What used to be happy was sad
Somethin' happened along the way
And yesterday was all we had

And oh, after the love has gone
How could you lead me on
And not let me stay around?
Oh, after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found?

For a while to love each other
With all we would ever need
Love was strong for so long
Never knew that what was wrong
Baby, wasn't right
We tried to find what we had
'Til sadness was all we shared
We were scared this affair
Would lead our love into
Somethin' happened along the way
Yesterday was all we had
Somethin' happened along the way
What used to be happy is sad
Somethin' happened along the way
And yesterday was all we had

And oh, after the love has gone
How could you lead me on
And not let me stay around?
Oh, oh, oh after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found?

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
After the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh, oh, oh, after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh oh, oh after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh after the love has gone
What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found
Oh, oh, oh, after the love has gone

What used to be right is wrong
Can love that's lost be found

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Earth Wind & Fire's song "After the Love Has Gone" are about the end of a romantic relationship that was once filled with love and passion. The song describes how the couple's love gradually weakened over time until it "wasn't right" anymore, and they were left with only memories of the happiness they once shared. The song also explores the theme of nostalgia, as the couple looks back on the past and wonders if they could have saved their relationship if they had done things differently.

The opening lines of the song set the scene for a romance that was once full of promise and excitement. The couple was young and in love, and nothing else seemed to matter. They felt that their love was "true" and that it would last forever. As the song progresses, however, the lyrics reveal that something went wrong along the way. The couple stopped paying attention to the signs that their love was fading, and they took each other for granted. The love that used to be "strong for so long" gradually turned into sadness and regret, and the couple was left wondering where it all went wrong.

Despite the pain of their breakup, the couple in the song still holds onto a glimmer of hope that their love can be rekindled. They question if it's possible for "love that's lost [to] be found," and they wonder if they will ever be able to recapture the happiness they once felt together. Ultimately, the song is a bittersweet reflection on the complexities of love and the inevitability of change.

I am 21, and still jamming out to this song. This song reminds me of my mom, she...unfortunately succumbed to colon cancer back in 2013. Every time I hear this song, it would make me sad, because she was my mom, she might've not been a good mom to yall, but to me, she was a great mom. She told me to be happy, she told me that not to cry about her, she told me that she will be in my heart and watching over me. Those were her last words. I dropped down my DS (ended up breaking it) and was crying at her side. I never thought I would lose my mom, and when they disconnected my mom from life support, I went running and hugging my dad and crying. Fast forward to May 25th, 2019, I was graduating. Once this song came on as the Graduation Song, I looked at my family, and I went running to them and cried. I wanted everyone to be there, including my mom. My friends were there to comfort me also. I really miss my mom. Someday mom, I will reunite with you again! Until then, I will try my hardest. I love you mom!

And yesterday was all we had

Let me lay some facts on you my fellow YouTube Listeners: This song was written b y David Foster, Jay Graydon and Bill Chaplin. It was first offered to the duo group " Hall & Oates."At the time they were not interested in recording any music that wasn't written by them. When D. Foster presented to Maurice White, he gave the song a thumbs up. Verdine White, brother of Maurice White, stated that it was the most difficult song they had ever recorded. They felt the vibe had to be right in order to pull it off. He went on to say they recorded 6 to 7 times before M. White said that's it. Thats the one. It found its way to #2 on Billboards 100 list in 1979 for 2 weeks. It took home 2 Grammy's. Best R&B duo or a group and Best R&B song Grammy for composers D. Foster and J. Graydon. And now you know. Lol

David Foster is absolutely amazing.. wow

@79superegghead

Not just 6-7 times. It was 6 days of trying before they felt that it was perfect.
