the moon creation story just never sat well with me.

I recently was reading a paper suggesting a separate origin, apparently if you model out a cosmic cloud and have the earth form as a "dual" or binary planet system with the moon from the same cloud, you solve a million and one problems with the origin of earth. For one, they found the iron makeup, which was the "proof" of the current moon theory, will split between the fledgling earth and moon about in the percentages you currently get, with the earth getting the majority of it. People think of binary planets as two identical planets, yet in reality the mass almost always splits on the 9 to 1 ratio (which happens to be about the split of mass between earth and the moon)

This model also solves the source of water on earth. See water on comets in the solar system is deuterium (heavy water) heavy, there is very little heavy water on earth. so if the source of water on earth was from comets, there would be a heck of a lot more heavy water here. However, when space rocks in the solar system rich with water (like most rocks in the solar system) are exposed to the cosmic forces of a binary planet system forming, the result is a LOT of water being "squeezed and cooked" out of the rocks with about the same percentage of heavy water as you get on earth. Furthermore this process creates ocean water, as sodium commonly will become bonded with the water created in this method. the water didn't come here on comets, it came here with the rocks and was "cooked" through stresses from the planet forming out of the rocks and onto the surface of the planet.

Furthermore the spinning of the planet, the distance of the current moon, and the stability of our orbit all work out pretty well with this model, with them able to consistently get a very earth-moon like system 9 out of 20 times which is way more common then the earth-moon system created by a strike from a mars like world in most simulations, the conclusion was it was a far more likely (mathematically) origin for earth then anything explained by the moon-strike theory.

in short, while the thea strike theory of the moon origin is possible, it's a highly unlikely event (mathematically), meanwhile a binary planet system forming from a protoplanetary cloud of debris is a very likely event (mathematically), furthermore it answers a lot of questions about the strange composition of earth and the size of it's moon.

I have a question maybe some of you can answer. Watching this particular video sparked this question. Several of the other videos on the history channel talk about the mineral IRIDIUM. Saying that iridium is a common mineral in space but not so much here on earth. They all seem to find iridium near the younger dryas. So, if earth was formed by space particles at first, then meteors, why is iridium NOT a common mineral on earth. Seems like it would be abundant to me.

As I understand it, most of earth's iridium would've bonded with iron while the planet was in a molten state and sank to the center of the planet. If that's true then earth has its fair share of iridium and most of what's found in the crust was likely deposited by meteorites after the planet cooled down. But I'm just a stoner on YouTube so take all of that with a grain or two.

Is the statement that earth melted due to radioactive decay incorrect? I know this is an old episode, but I still thought at this time in the mid 2000s it was well established in planetary science that Thea collided with a proto-earth, which was the cause for the formation of the moon. We know this happened relatively early on in earths history, and immediately following the collision earth’s surface would have also “melted”. Why isn’t this the correct explanation (or is it)?

To me, the most mind blowing thing of all about the colossal process of plate tectonics, where whole mountain chains are raised and vast ocean basins are opened and then closed, is that it is all ultimately driven by subatomic processes!, namely the radioactive decay of uranium, thorium, and potassium atoms in Earth’s crust and mantle. Yeah the water explanation doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. How did all of that water escape the mentioned meteorites in such large pools. It would make a lot more sense that it was vaporized from the original heating of the original meteorites of the earth and cooled and condensed in a short period to form large bodies. Probably would have also helped form the crust in this way, and would seem to fit the Canadian geologists discovery.

It always bugs me when they discuss the age of the stromatolites by saying stromatolites “created” or “made” the oxygen that filled the earth’s atmosphere. The stromatolites only “RELEASED” the oxygen CHEMICALLY through photosynthesis. The oxygen atoms were already there, locked up in the water molecules (H₂O) and mineral oxides. The oxygen atoms themselves were “created” about a billion years earlier with the other elements inside the cores of massive stars that exploded, scattering nebulae of elements as dust and gas, that mixed with primordial hydrogen and helium, and then later coalesced into planetary systems. No atoms (elements) can be “created” by chemical reactions. Atoms need a nucleus made, which requires nuclear reactions at billion-degree temperatures and billion-psi pressures, found only in the cores of massive stars.

Looks like a blatant attempt to trivialize the role photosynthesis has played in using energy from the sun to convert CO2 and H2O into complex hydrocarbon chains (plant life) and releasing O2 as a byproduct. The single Oxygen atom is created in stars. But atmospheric Oxygen (O2) was "created" by the cyanobacteria. Chemical reactions don't create elements but they do create molecules such as O2. So they are not incorrect in using such terminology as "create" or "made".

So I did some math, weight of a grain of salt is .00005850 grams (That's the weight of the entire salt grain, not just the water) X 10K grains of salt hitting the earth per meteorite, times another 10K meteorite strikes/year which comes out to 12.897lbs/day. That's 5K lbs/year of scattered micro specs of water falling onto a scorching hot planet. NOPE. You're going to half to do better boys.

Not necessarily, tectonic plates shift and geography changes. Mountains can literally rise from oceans when continents collide, take himalayas for example. The spot in Canada could have well been under the ocean but is not anymore.

I remember when I first learned about the moon actually being a big chunk of the earth when I was a teen. I was so blown away. But the elements on the moon are the exact same composition as earth’s and date to the same age. It’s conclusive proof.

I would imagine the debris from the collision briefly formed a ring around Earth, but as time went buy it either collided with Earth, collided with the proto-Moon, or got ejected from Earth's orbital path. It's actually thought that after the collision with Earth and Theia, we had TWO moon's that orbited Earth. Gravity being what it is, both of them eventually collided with each other. The northern hemisphere of the Moon has higher terrain than other areas on the lunar surface. Most evidence out there tends to agree with the Moon having a "splat" haha.

I've watched almost all of this series on here and this is the first episode where I don't feel like the evidence backed up the claims. The biggest claim is that the foundations of life (water and amino acids came from meteorites).

Let me explain: I accept that there is sufficient evidence that amino acids and water came from other celestial bodies such as meteorites. However, this is insufficient evidence to prove that it's the sole source. Earth could have very well developed water and amino acids the same exact way that all those meteorites did. As explained in early in the video, the meteorites were formed the same way Earth was, under the same conditions, the only difference being that Earth grew larger faster. If everything about the formation of Earth and those meteorites was the same, there is nothing proving that amino acids and water didn't form on Earth just as it did on countless meteroites. Nowhere in the episode does it discuss this aspect. Instead we just get "since amino acids and water are found on meteorites, that's where it comes from" but that doesn't actually prove anything.
If anything this proves that the foundations of life are more widespread throughout the solar system than we thought.

TLDR: What was different to allow amino acids and water to form on meteorites and not Earth?

In my view it's the amount of water. If there was water in earth because it was formed in the same way as the meteorites, earth would still just have little droplets of water throughout. The majority, probably the extremely large majority, of the water would need to come from an insane number of other meteorite bodies contributing each just a small amount to the total water on earth. So you're likely right but it was probably such a minuscule amount relative to total that it's mathematically irrelevant and not an important thing to mention.

The much smaller pieces were much cooler. The earth was a massive molten ball of hot, liquidy rock and metal. Amino acids would have been destroyed. The meteors and asteroids would have delivered these without much trouble. Yes, some of the organic materials would have been destroyed, but not all.

The water theory makes no sense. If the water on a meteor was a very small part of the meteor and the earth already was all a solid wouldn’t it stand to reason that there’d be way more rock material than there actually is? I wish they would’ve given some calculations that would show the amount of rock material that had to land in order to account for all the water. Maybe it would make more sense then.

I personally believe that while the earth was still forming and was very miniscule, probably not long after it had a gravitational pull, these rocks were hitting it, meaning that a lot of the rock that struck and formed the earth's water struck very early and continued throughout. If it happened much later you would be completely correct and it really wouldn't make sense, but the earlier you put the beginning of this process, the more it makes sense. Hope this helped a bit

The moon is known to have an iron core, so I'm at a loss as to why the study of one (or a few) surface moon rocks would be taken as evidence that it does not by any ethical researcher.
