Rivers
Earth and Pillars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So there's longing in the shoulders now
There was a wildness in that time
Can't we now say
Oh, sweet were the hours but ours to find
There was no way to live in simple dreams
There was no straightness to our line
Gravel in hand
Darling, we're moving the mountains around

This is the fire of leaving pains
When the love is gone, but the need remains
Into the shivering cold of day
When the house is gone, but the street remain
Oh, I guess it's true
I guess these rivers never knew

And thn so finally the nightime comes
There is no lot to cast a blame, no need to hide
No fear who I'd meet in some grocery lane

This is the fire of leaving pains
When the love is gone, but the need remains
Into the shivering cold of day
When the house is gone, but the street remain
Oh, I guess it's true
I guess these rivers never knew

And I'll sing of seasons till you turn me off
I see their way of letting go
They'll be the same
And whatever changes, these changes I know

This is the fire of leaving pains
When we're not that strong and the need remains
Into the shivering lights of day
When the house is gone, but the fields remain

Oh, I guess it's true
I guess these rivers never knew

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Earth and Pillars’ song “Rivers” reflect the themes of loss and the passage of time. The opening lines, “there’s longing in the shoulders now” can be interpreted as a physical manifestation of the weight of memories and experiences that have been accumulated over time. The second line, “there was a wildness in that time,” suggests a nostalgia for a time when things were less tame and more adventurous. The following line “Can’t we now say, oh sweet were the hours but ours to find,” is a reflection on the fleeting nature of time and the importance of cherishing the moments we have.

The next lines, “There was no way to live in simple dreams, there was no straightness to our line,” reflect the reality that life is complex and unpredictable. The image of moving mountains with gravel in hand suggests a sense of determination and resilience in the face of obstacles.

The chorus, “This is the fire of leaving pains when the love is gone, but the need remains” speaks to the pain of loss and the struggle to move on, even when a part of us still longs for what we have lost. The lines “Oh, I guess it’s true, I guess these rivers never knew,” suggest a sense of resignation to the fact that life moves on even when we don’t always understand or accept it.

The final verse, “And I’ll sing of seasons till you turn me off, I see their way of letting go, they’ll be the same, and whatever changes, these changes I know,” speaks to the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of change. The lines “This is the fire of leaving pains, when we’re not that strong and the need remains, into the shivering lights of day, when the house is gone, but the fields remain,” suggest a sense of vulnerability and uncertainty, but also resilience and a willingness to adapt.

I know what you mean, there is a scratching sound on it.
I tought it might be my cd (since i uploaded this from a copy i've bought) but it's not, it's the way it was recorded.
If you check their album 'Pilars I' you'll hear the same scratching noise on it.
