The subject does not prevent the song from being upbeat and catchy. The so-called "Linda McCartney keyboard solo" is a fun touch, along with the fast-paced Carpenters-esque piano.

Although not originally intended to turn out this way, this song developed into something like a solo song in a Broadway play, where one of the characters steps into a spotlight and delivers the signature song that really explains what he's all about... in this case, loneliness, social deprivation and isolation from the people around him that he doesn't feel connected with.

The neighbors are portrayed in a rather outlandish light at bizarre characters, often silly, that surround this rather ordinary individual. Their names usually describe their behavior, if not explain it.

There's also an accidental reference to Ben Webster, influential American jazz tenor saxophonist, although that was never the intention of the author of the song who chose the name Benjamin Webster because it flowed with the song and sounded quite ordinary.
