Hey
Eatliz Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey,
I long to play
All the dreams I sent out
But one stayed
Behind to play
Hand a purple crayon
And paint the rainbow
In graceful colors
You don't like it
I see it in your face
And drink it through my fingertips

Hey,
I long to play
All the dreams I sent out
But one stayed
Behind to play
Hand another crayon
And paint the rainbow
In graceful colors
You don't like it
I see it in your face
And drink it through my fingertips

Hey,
I long to play
All the babies gone now
But mine stayed
In my mind to play
Mind tricks on me now
Insanity is taking over
I don't feel a thing

You see it in my face
And drink it through my fingertips

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eatliz's song "Hey" speak to the desire to live out one's dreams and imagination, and the frustration that comes when those dreams are not accepted by others. The opening lines express the longing to play and explore the possibilities of the dreams that have been sent out, but one dream stayed behind to play. The image of a purple crayon and painting the rainbow represents the idea of creating something new and colorful, but when the creation is not liked or accepted by others, it is a painful realization. The line "I see it in your face and drink it through my fingertips" is a powerful expression of how rejection can be physically felt.

The second stanza repeats the first, with the addition of another crayon and the same desire to create in graceful colors. The final stanza introduces a shift - the babies are gone, but one has stayed behind to play mind tricks, leading to the insanity that is taking over. It is unclear what this line refers to, but it speaks to the frustration of not being able to fully live out one's dreams and the toll that it can take on the mind and emotions. The closing line "You see it in my face and drink it through my fingertips" echoes the previous line and reinforces the idea that rejection and frustration can be deeply felt.

Overall, the lyrics of "Hey" speak to the human desire to create and imagine, and the pain that comes when those creations are not accepted or understood by others. It also touches on the toll that unfulfilled dreams can take on the mind and emotions.

I've heard this just over ten years ago and have thought about it and came back every couple years. Absolutely loved the animation and song and I came back once again!

I used to watch this all the time in middle school. I'm 25 now, and I still come back to it occasionally, hits just as hard as way back then! My favorite part is always when they're spinning each other around in that magic box, and the music slows down a bit. Captures something really melancholy when she opens it up and there's just the balloon inside.

music is a way of connecting and passing an emotion from one person to another and allowing those two people to feel similar emotions. Although we all connect with music differently its an amazing thing when someone can do this so well! Bravo!

Daniel West

This is absolutely stunning. I haven't heard music as interesting and well-written in a long time.
