Dark Therapy
Echobelly Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Higher than the milky way,
Slipping through the hour glass,
Shooting up the desert plain,
You are one life older than before,
But you can't stop the chill,
Now you're falling in slow motion,
Though the air is still.
If you close your eyes than I can take you all the way,
Let me close your eyes and I will take it all the way.
You are on the outside,
Hands upon the window sill,
I am on the inside,
Carving up the hunters kill.
If you close your eyes than I can take you all the way,
Let me close your eyes and I will take it all the way.
Cruising on a missile,
Cruising on a desert plain,
Wading through a minefield,
Wading through the monsoon rain,
Surfing on an oil spill,
Surfing on a perfect wave,
Porn upon the airwaves,
Rituals of the mating game.
If you close your eyes than I can take you all the way,
Let me close your eyes and I will take it all the way.
The lyrics of Echobelly's "Dark Therapy" describe a feeling of being disconnected from reality and drifting through time and space. The first verse paints a picture of soaring high above the world and moving through it with ease, but also feeling a sense of isolation and being unable to shake off a cold feeling. The singer implores the listener to close their eyes and let them guide them, implying a level of trust and a desire to escape this sense of detachment.
The second verse suggests a contrast between two different perspectives of the world: one on the outside looking in, and the other on the inside, actively shaping events. The imagery shifts to more turbulent and dangerous situations, such as navigating a minefield and surfing on an oil spill, perhaps suggesting the chaos and unpredictability of life. Despite this, the singer offers the idea of finding pleasure and meaning in life's rituals, such as those of the "mating game."
Overall, the song seems to be exploring the tension between the desire to escape from difficult emotions and situations, and the search for meaning and connection in a chaotic world. The repeated refrain of "if you close your eyes than I can take you all the way" suggests a desire for connection and trust, but it remains unclear whether this is a healthy or sustainable way to approach life.

@Chris Macfarlane Outhere Brothers = music for the masses - aka trash!! Doesn't say much for the UK, even back in 1995!

When you consider The Outhere Brothers with the instantly forgettable "Don't Stop (Wiggle Wiggle)" was a No1 the same year, yeah.

It was 1995; competition was stiff!

Really underrated classic and one of my favorite Britpop/alt rock tracks from the mid-90s. Deserved much better than only reaching no. 20 on the UK charts.
