The band was formed around 1992, after Hurst answered an ad placed by Tom Ferriss (formerly of Moev) in a Seattle-area newspaper. The band released a 5-song EP called "Purge" before their first LP, "Affliction" came out to critical acclaim and moderate commercial success in Canada.
Though it received mixed reviews, their second LP, The Devil You Know, has been the band's greatest commercial success to date. Produced by veteran producer Sylvia Massy (Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers), the album features a more mainstream sound than "Affliction." After their success with "The Devil You Know," the band returned to the studio with another veteran producer, Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crue), to create their third LP, which became "Brand New History."
While "Brand New History" was a moderate commercial success, it received mixed critical reviews. Following the release of the album's first single in 2001, "Make It Right," the band went on hiatus. During the hiatus, Trevor Hurst started a new band called "Hurst". However, in January 2007, the band got back together to tour with Hinder across Canada and most recently, with Three Days Grace and Seether. Their independently-released fourth LP, "Ignite," came out on January 15, 2008.

Econoline Crush Lyrics

Are you my ememy, my lover, my ruin?
Warm and shallow are, the waters of your soul
It's my difference, my hurt that makes you whole
Chorus:
You lift me up drag me down
And here I am
Alone
Pieces of my sanity, my will, my hope have left
I don't understand, where this all began
Are you my enemy, my lover, my ruin?
(Chorus)
You are so far away
You are so far away
You lift me up, you drag me down
You leave me so alone
(Chorus)
I watch you turn away...I watch you
I watch you turn away...crying
The lyrics to "Close" by Econoline Crush depict a relationship filled with turmoil and struggle. The first verse sets a gloomy scene as the shadow dances lazily across the dimly lit room. The singer contemplates whether their partner is their enemy, lover, or even their ruin. The waters of their partner's soul are described as warm and shallow, implying that there is not much depth to their emotional state. However, it's the singer's difference and hurt that make their partner feel complete. The chorus then repeats the phrase "You lift me up, drag me down, and here I am alone," indicating that the relationship is causing the singer to experience highs and lows, but ultimately leaves them feeling isolated and alone. The second verse continues with the theme of confusion and the feeling of being lost, as the singer searches for serenity in the halls of discontent. They feel like pieces of their sanity, will, and hope are slowly being chipped away, and they don't know where everything went wrong. The chorus repeats one more time, then a final line is added: "I watch you turn away, crying." This last line suggests that the partner is leaving, causing the singer to feel like they're being left behind, perhaps not understanding why they're being abandoned.
Overall, the lyrics to "Close" paint a picture of a relationship that's unsustainable and ultimately doomed to fail. The writer clearly feels suffocated and alone, even when in the company of their partner. There is a sense of betrayal and resentment between the two, and it's unclear who started the fight or what exactly caused the relationship to unravel. The lyrics leave a feeling of melancholy and uncertainty, which is intensified by the haunting melody and slow pace of the song.
