Apple Of My Eye

You walk in the rain
You walk around the house
Then walk around it again
You pretend you're happy
That you've got it all
But don't be upset
And beg like a dog
I've reached a low,
Don't you know
You're the apple of my eye
I'm running low, with this show
No matter how I try
I'm sick of this angst,
Don't need thanks
You're the apple of my eye
I drink a lot of wine
When I am alone
I lose my track of time
My ideas turn to stone
I pretend I'm sad
That I'm still so small
But I'm not upset If
I fall on my knees
And beg like a dog
I've reached a low,
Don't you know
You're the apple of my eye
I'm running low, with this show
No matter how I try
I'm sick of this angst,
Don't need thanks
You're the apple of my eye
I've reached a low,
Don't you know
You're the apple of my eye
I'm running low, with this show
No matter how I try
I'm sick of this angst,
Don't need thanks
You're the apple of my eye
The lyrics to "Apple Of My Eye" by Ed Harcourt seem to address the feeling of loneliness and the facade people put up to hide it. The opening lines describe the act of walking aimlessly, especially in the rain, suggesting a sense of desperation or longing for something. The second verse talks about drowning one's sorrows in wine and losing track of time, which often happens when one is consumed by loneliness. The chorus reveals that despite feeling low, the subject of the song finds comfort and solace in someone, referred to as the "apple of my eye."
The repeated use of the phrase "beg like a dog" conveys the desperation and vulnerability of the subject. These lines could also suggest that the subject is willing to put their pride aside in order to seek companionship or connection. The use of the word apple could be used to personify the person they are finding comfort in, but it could also be interpreted as a metaphor for a sense of joy or happiness that is otherwise lacking.
In conclusion, "Apple Of My Eye" is a poignant exploration of the universal emotion of loneliness and longing. It highlights the importance of finding solace in someone, even when one is at their lowest point in life.

This song pops into my head every now and then, remembering it from a Q' album I used to own and everytime I try to find it not remembering who it was by... finally I find it and now after what feels like years I can actually stop looking and add it to my collection... brings back a time full of good memories, wow!
