Drive
Ed Kowalczyk Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Headed out into my desert
All alone and thirsty for something more
Than the whiskey that had become my water
Would you mind if I put this on your shoulder?
I need something more
Here I am,
Standing inside your love like a child.
Falling asleep at the wheel of my life
And letting you drive.
I'm letting you drive.
Oooh...
Headed out into my dark night,
Like a soldier surrounded in the losing fight.
Probability of a victory's over.
Would you mind if I put this on your shoulder?
I need something more
Here I am,
Standing inside your love like a child.
Falling asleep at the wheel of my life
And letting you drive.
I'm letting you drive.
Oooh....
You're the only one,
You're the only one who can save me.
I need something more
Here I am,
Standing inside your love like a child.
Falling asleep at the wheel of my life
And letting you drive.
I'm letting you drive.
Here I am,
Right where I belong.
On the shoulder, hanging off the keys,
Close my eyes and letting you drive
I'm letting you drive.
The song "Drive" by Ed Kowalczyk is a heartfelt plea for help and guidance. The singer finds himself lost and alone in the desert, running on whiskey and searching for something more. He recognizes that he can no longer rely on himself and turns to someone else for support. He surrenders control of his life, falling asleep at the wheel and allowing the person he loves to take over and guide him through his darkness.
The lyrics express vulnerability, as the singer puts his trust in someone else and admits that he can't do it alone. The metaphor of driving is powerful, representing the journey of life and the need for someone to lean on when things get tough. The repetition of "I'm letting you drive" emphasizes the surrender of control and the comfort that comes with it. The final lines suggest a peaceful acceptance of his place on the shoulder, content to be a passenger as long as he has his loved one to guide him.

Throwing Copper was the soundtrack to my final year of high school. The songs of that album bring back so many memories of people, places and events of that year. I saw Ed perform live in 2018 with Live, it was one of the best nights of my life.
