Friends

We just try to keep those secrets in a lie
And if they find out, will it all go wrong?
And Heaven knows, no one wants it to
So I could take the back road
But your eyes will lead me straight back home
And if you know me like I know you
Friends just sleep in another bed
And friends don't treat me like you do
Well I know that there's a limit to everything
But my friends won't love me like you
No, my friends won't love me like you
We're not friends, we could be anything
If we try to keep those secrets safe
No one will find out if it all went wrong
They'll never know what we've been through
So I could take the back road
But your eyes'll lead me straight back home
And if you know me like I know you
You should love me, you should know that
Friends just sleep in another bed
And friends don't treat me like you do
And I know that there's a limit to everything
But my friends won't love me like you
No, my friends won't love me like you
But then again, if we're not friends
Someone else might love you, too
And then again, if we're not friends
There'd be nothing I could do, and that's why
Friends should sleep in other beds
And friends shouldn't kiss me like you do
And I know that there's a limit to everything
But my friends won't love me like you
No, my friends won't love me like you do
Oh, my friends will never love me like you
In Ed Sheeran's song "Friend," it is hinted that the friendship between the singer and the person he is addressing is not strictly platonic. The lyrics emphasize that their relationship is built on keeping secrets and lies, and if these hidden feelings are revealed, it could lead to disaster. The singer is caught in a dilemma as he tries to choose if he should keep his feelings hidden and continue the charade, or risk losing everything by exposing those feelings. Despite the risks, the singer still finds himself drawn towards the person he is addressing, acknowledging that his friend's love is incomparable to what his actual friends could provide.
The lyrics are beautifully written, exploring the intricate balance between love and friendship. People often find themselves in situations similar to what the singer is experiencing, forced to suppress what they feel for fear of jeopardizing a valuable friendship. It is a testament to Ed Sheeran's songwriting prowess that he was able to capture these complicated feelings and express them through a heart-wrenching ballad.

Just imagine:
Ed called Harry... he needed to write a love song. Asked him to talk about Louis for a while for some ideas.
Hours later.
alright.. that's enough about how much you love the blue of his eyes..
