Sheeran also released two albums, a self titled one in 2006 and Want Some? in 2007 gaining little attention. After Sheeran moved to London and had done extensive gigging, performing songs from his EP and albums, as well as ones which he had recently written, he decided to release another EP, You Need Me in late 2009. However, it wasn't until February 2010 that Sheeran began to get noticed after he posted a video through SB.tv displaying his diverse style. This video led to mainstream rapper Example asking Sheeran to tour with him. Throughout 2010, Sheeran began to be seen by more and more people over the internet through [app] YouTube and his fan-base grew incredibly, with him also getting credit from The Independent newspaper, England football captain Rio Ferdinand and even Elton John. During the year, Sheeran also went to the US, where he was discovered by international superstar Jamie Foxx, who asked Sheeran to perform on his radio show, which gained him some fans in the US. By the end of the year, Sheeran was seen to be one of the best unsigned artists in the country.
On 9 January 2011, Sheeran released his final independent EP, No.5 Collaborations Project featuring appearances by grime artists including Wiley, JME, Devlin and Ghetts. With this EP, Sheeran gained mainstream attention for reaching number 2 in the iTunes chart, without any promotion or label. He was listed as a 'special guest' on Devlin's 2011 'Bud, Sweat and Beers' mini tour alongside Griminal and Tinchy Stryder. Songfacts reports that after signing for Atlantic Records in January 2011 "The A Team" was released as the first single from his debut album on June 12, 2011.

Make It Rain
Ed Sheeran Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Weigh down in my soul
And the pain of my mother
Will not let me go
Well, I know there can come fire from the sky
To refine the purest of kings
And even though I know this fire brings me pain
Even so and just the same
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
Well, a seed needs the water
'Fore it grows out of the ground
But it just keeps on getting hard
And hunger more profound
Well, I know they can't count tears from the eye
But they may as well all be in vain
And even though I know these tears come with pain
Even so and just the same
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Just make it rain
Make it rain
Well, the seas are full of water
Stops by the shore
Just like the riches of grandeur, oh, no, no
Never reach the poor
And let the clouds fill with thunderous applause
And let lightning be the veins
But fill the sky with all that they can draw
When it's time to make a change
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain down, Lord
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain
Oh, make it rain
The lyrics of Ed Sheeran's "Make It Rain" are highly symbolic and thought-provoking. The song follows a lyrical ballad style that reflects upon the depths of pain and suffering. The opening lines of the song, "When the sins of my father weigh down on my soul and the pain of my mother will not let me go," convey someone who is struggling with the pain and agony of their past. The song's first half explores the idea of being refined by fire and how it can purify a person's character. The phrase "refine the purest of kings" suggests that fire can come to anyone, regardless of their strengths or weaknesses, and that it can be used as a means of refining them.
The second half of the song shifts its focus to the tears and deep sorrow that a person carries with them. The line "Well, I know they can't count tears from the eye, but they may as well all be in vain" is a poignant reminder that a person's pain can go unnoticed, forced to carry the burden of their suffering alone. The final verse brings in the idea of change, that the "clouds fill with thunderous applause," and "let lightning be the veins" is symbolic of the power and impact noticeable change can bring. The song's final lines, "Make it rain," serve as a symbolic representation of true change, and the song calls for it to rain and bring changes that will end the pain.
Line by Line Meaning
When the sins of my father
When I am burdened by the mistakes made by my father
Weigh down in my soul
And these mistakes are causing me emotional pain
And the pain of my mother
In addition to this, I also cannot shake off the pain and suffering experienced by my mother
Will not let me go
This pain is holding on to me deeply
Well, I know there can come fire from the sky
I understand that sometimes, difficult situations arise that can be likened to a fiery test
To refine the purest of kings
This test can serve to refine a person of the highest honor
And even though I know this fire brings me pain
Although I know this test will cause me pain
Even so and just the same
Still, I am willing to endure it
Make it rain
I am asking for something quite significant
Make it rain down, Lord
I am asking for a divine intervention
Well, a seed needs the water
Like a seed, I too need something to grow and develop
'Fore it grows out of the ground
Before I can grow and thrive
But it just keeps on getting hard
But there are obstacles that keep making growth difficult
And hunger more profound
I am also struggling with a deep, unsatisfied hunger
Well, I know they can't count tears from the eye
I know that tears cannot be quantified
But they may as well all be in vain
But it seems like my tears don't amount to much
And even though I know these tears come with pain
And although I understand that these tears signify the pain I am currently experiencing
Even so and just the same
Still, I am steadfast in my request
Just make it rain
Just as before, I am asking for divine intervention to overcome my struggles
Well, the seas are full of water
Water is something that is abundant and can be found all around us
Stops by the shore
But at times, it can be stopped short of reaching those in need
Just like the riches of grandeur, oh, no, no
Similar to the way in which wealth is often concentrated in the hands of a few
Never reach the poor
Those in need often do not benefit from this wealth
And let the clouds fill with thunderous applause
I am calling for something that is nothing short of a spectacle
And let lightning be the veins
I want something powerful and catalyzing
But fill the sky with all that they can draw
I want something that is all-encompassing and leaves nothing to chance
When it's time to make a change
When it's time for things to change for the better, I am asking for help
Oh, make it rain
I am making this request passionately
Make it rain
I am asking for something that is transformative and significant
Make it rain down, Lord
And I am looking to a higher power to make this happen
Make it rain
I am seeking something that is beyond what is possible through my own efforts
Make it rain
I am praying for a breakthrough
Make it rain
I am calling out for help
Make it rain
I need something to change my situation
Oh, make it rain
I am desperate for a solution
Make it rain
Please, let something happen
Make it rain
I am putting my faith in something greater than myself
Make it rain
I am asking for a miracle
Make it rain
Please, let change come
Make it rain
I need help
