Wild Mountain Thyme
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh the summer time is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Would you go, lassie, go?

And we'll all go together
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Would you go, lassie, go?

And I will build my love a bower
And yon pure crystal fountain
And around it I will place
All the colors of the mountain
Would you go, lassie, go?

And we'll all go together
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around the blooming heather
Would you go, lassie, go?

And If my true love's gone
I will surely find another
And to her I will sing
Things that make her know I want her

Would you go, lassie, go?
And we'll all go together
Where the wild mountain thyme
Grows around blooming heather

Would you go, lassie, go?

Overall Meaning

In this traditional folk song, Ed Sheeran invites the listener to join him in the beauty of nature during the summertime. He lures a lassie to come with him where the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather. The song is set in a rural place where the surroundings are lush with greenery and beauty. He expresses his love for the sights and sounds of nature, and he wants to share it all with this lassie. He promises to build her a bower near a pure crystal fountain and surround it with all the colors of the mountain. If his true love has gone, he will find another to share the beauty of nature with, and he will sing to her things that make her know he wants her.

The lyrics of this song were written by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill in the early 19th century. It is also known as "Purple Heather" or "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?" and has been covered by a variety of artists over the years, including Joan Baez, The Clancy Brothers, and Van Morrison.

I appreciate people who love this type of music.
It is so Nostalgic like I just want to sit by the river or watching a sunset and sing this song while strumming my guitar.

This will forever be one of my favorite versions of this song.

One of the great things about Sheeran is that he takes beautiful old traditional songs, like this and “The Parting Glass”, and makes them cool for young people to listen to. They’d probably never hear them otherwise. And maybe it gives them an appetite for more great older music.

He also has a wonderful voice, of course.

As some of us say in Texas, I love this REAL BAD! There is something heartbreaking about your voice, Ed. Stunning work!
