What Do I Know?
Ed Sheeran [FazMusic.Net] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You must have it all figured out
But you're laying awake
And I'm radio silent tonight
"Don't be scared, I'll be there"
Just a backdrop for another lie
So don't even try
We're astray, bomb's awayI'm still picking up the pieces
After the mess you've made
Please don't come to my funeral
I fucking hate you all
"I can't believe he's dead
Please God take me instead!"
That's what they'll say I'm sure
You are all murderers
Who have the fucking gall
To spray me against the wall
I don't care what you think you know
Please don't come to my funeral
I fucking hate you all
I fucking hate you all
I can self destruct brick by brick laying out
In the twilight, you know that I'll be up all night
We can play pretend and I'll say that it's actually alright
I just want to seem like it's alright
You won't be with me but can't be without me
It's not the first time it's happened, don't worry
You say I'm the man when you want something from me
You only love me when I'm in the hot seat
Please don't come to my funeral
I fucking hate you all
"I can't believe he's dead
Please God take me instead!"
You are all murderers
Who have the fucking gall
To spray me against the wall
I don't care what you think you know
Please don't come to my funeral
I fucking hate you all
Please don't come to my funeral
I fucking hate you all
"I can't believe he's dead
Please God take me instead!"
That's what they'll say i'm sure
You are all murderers
Who have the fucking gall
To spray me against the wall
I don't care what you think you know
Please don't come to my funeral
I fucking hate you all
The lyrics of Ed Sheeran's song "What Do I Know?" paint a vivid picture of emotional turmoil, betrayal, and a sense of abandonment. The opening lines set the tone with imagery of a sinking ship, symbolizing a situation that is falling apart. The singer seems to be calling out to someone who appears to have it all figured out but is actually struggling silently. The mention of being "radio silent" suggests a lack of communication or understanding between the two parties, further emphasizing the disconnect and confusion in the relationship.
As the lyrics unfold, a sense of anger and resentment emerges, particularly towards those who have caused pain and turmoil. The singer expresses a feeling of being betrayed and abandoned, perhaps by people who were supposed to support and care for them. The intense emotions are raw and unfiltered, with a plea for these individuals not to show up at their funeral as a symbol of the deep-seated hatred and hurt they have caused.
The repeated refrain of "Please don't come to my funeral, I f***ing hate you all" underscores a deep sense of disillusionment and betrayal. The singer feels misunderstood and mistreated, with a deep-seated anger towards those who have hurt them. Despite the intense emotions, there is a vulnerability present as well, as the singer grapples with feelings of inadequacy and being used by those around them.
The bridge introduces a sense of self-awareness and inner turmoil, with the singer acknowledging their own destructive tendencies and desire to appear strong despite their inner struggles. The lyrics paint a complex picture of a person in pain, grappling with feelings of love, hate, and betrayal, all wrapped up in a powerful and emotionally charged plea for understanding and acknowledgment. The song serves as a poignant exploration of human emotions and the complexities of relationships, capturing the rawness and intensity of personal struggles and betrayals.

You call as your sinking ship goes down

We're lost and the situation is explosive
I'm still picking up the pieces

Ain't got a soapbox I can stand upon
But God gave me a stage, a guitar and a song
My daddy told me, "Son, don't you get involved in
Politics, religions or other people's quotes."
I'll paint the picture, let me set the scene
I know when I have children they will know what it means
And I pass on these things my family's given to me
Just love and understanding, positivity
We could change this whole world with a piano
Add a bass, some guitar, grab a beat
And away we go
I'm just a boy with a one-man show
No university, no degree
But lord knows everybody's talking 'bout exponential growth
And the stock market crashing in their portfolios
While I'll be sitting here with a song that I wrote
Sing, love could change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment
The revolution's coming, it's a minute away
I saw people marching in the streets today
You know we are made up of love and hate
But both of them are balanced on a razor blade
I'll paint the picture, let me set the scene
I know, I'm all for people following their dreams
Just re-remember life is more than fittin' in your jeans
It's love and understanding, positivity
We could change this whole world with a piano
Add a bass, some guitar, grab a beat
And away we go
I'm just a boy with a one-man show
No university, no degree
But lord knows everybody's talking 'bout exponential growth
And the stock market crashing in their portfolios
While I'll be sitting here with a song that I wrote
Sing, love could change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment
I'll paint the picture, let me set the scene
You know, the future's in the hands of you and me
So let's all get together, we can all be free
Spread love and understanding, positivity
We could change this whole world with a piano
Add a bass, some guitar, grab a beat
And away we go
I'm just a boy with a one-man show
No university, no degree
But lord knows everybody's talking 'bout exponential growth
And the stock market crashing in their portfolios
While I'll be sitting here with a song that I wrote
Sing, love could change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment
But what do I know?
Love can change the world in a moment
But what do I know?

Despite his father telling him not to publicly speak about controversial topics, “What Do I Know?” is Ed’s passive way of aligning himself with the those who want to change the world peacefully. Even though he isn’t the most educated or knowledgeable about how exactly to do that, he knows that music has a powerful effect on the world, and he sets out to change the world through his own music.

Reminds me of a visual novel I read some time ago where a girl believed the world could be changed with just "cookies and a smile" she was talking about kindness, love and acceptance. It was a lovely little piece I'll never forget; just like this song. Man, I'm in love with this album!
