Impossible
Ed Sheeran Vs. James Arthur Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I remember, years ago
Someone told me I should take
Caution when it comes to love, I did
And you were strong and I was not
My illusion, my mistake
I was careless, I forgot, I did
And now
When all is done, there is nothing to say
You have gone and so effortlessly
You have won, you can go ahead, tell them
Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the rooftops
Write it on the skyline
All we had is gone now
Tell them I was happy
And my heart is broken
All my scars are open
Tell them what I hoped would be impossible
Impossible
Impossible
Impossible
Falling out of love is hard
Falling for betrayal is worse
Broken trust and broken hearts
I know, I know
And thinking all you need is there
Building faith on love and words
Empty promises will wear
I know
I know and now
When all is done, there is nothing to say
And if you're done with embarrassing me
On your own, you can go ahead, tell them
Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the rooftops
Write it on the skyline
All we had is gone now
Tell them I was happy
And my heart is broken
All my scars are open
Tell them what I hoped would be impossible
Impossible
Impossible
Impossible
I remember, years ago

Caution when it comes to love
I did
Tell them all I know now
Shout it from the rooftops
Write it on the skyline
All we had is gone now
Tell them I was happy
And my heart is broken
Oh, hoped would be impossible
Impossible (impossible)

The lyrics to Ed Sheeran Vs. James Arthur's song Impossible reflects the pain and heartbreak of a failed relationship. The first verse highlights the regret of the singer for not being cautious when it came to love. They acknowledge that they were careless and allowed their illusion to cloud their judgment. The chorus speaks of the aftermath of the break-up, where the lover has moved on effortlessly and the singer is left brokenhearted. They want to shout from the rooftops what they know now, that their love is gone and that they were happy, but it has all come to an end.
In the second verse, the singer speaks of the difficulty of falling out of love, which is made even worse by falling into betrayal. Even though the singer believed they had love and faith built on solid ground, they now realize that it was all built on empty promises. The final chorus repeats the sentiment of the first chorus, with the singer crying out that they all they had is now gone, and that their heart is broken.
The song's weighty theme of heartbreak was inspired by Arthur's personal life experiences, notably his relationship with an ex-girlfriend who cheated on him. Sheeran has mentioned that he was inspired by Arthur's version of the song, and he decided to collaborate with him.

james has that ruff raspy raw sound. like he's really belting out the pain of feelings in the song. ed has a more fluency in his notes full of graceful swift and gentle swirls. they both match in gifted talent. They are just two very different styles
@cierraroden8137
That's not true. You can hear the pain in Ed Sheeran's voice when he was singing this song. If you looked close enough you can tell he was upset.
@n00bKen
@@cierraroden8137 It's more of a difference in techniques (Idk the exact term) since they are very distinct in terms of singing styles.

I realise I'm very late on this comment, however, I would like to inform you that he probably does that to get it to where he's playing the guitar at the right tempo. It's the same thing you do for concert band f you're in an orchestral band or something similar. You give 4 counts and then you can start.

James no doubt. There's such a raw passion in his voice that Ed just doesn't have.
But I love them both.
