Dinah
Eddie Cantor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Carolina
Gave me Dinah;
I'm the proudest one
Beneath the Dixie sun.

News is spreadin'
'Bout our weddin';
I hear church bells ringin',
Here's the song my heart keeps singin':

Dinah,
Is there anyone finer
In the state of Carolina?
If there is and you know her,
Show her!

Dinah,
With her Dixie eyes blazin',
How I love to sit and gaze in
To the eyes of Dinah Lee!

Yet, every night,
My, how I shake with fright,
Because my Dinah might,
Change her mind about me!

But if Dinah,
Ever wandered to China,
I would hop an ocean liner,
Just to be with Dinah Lee!

Dinah,
Is there anyone finer
In the state of Carolina?
If there is and you know her,
Show her!

Dinah,
With her Dixie eyes blazin',
How I love to sit and gaze in
To the eyes of Dinah Lee!

Yet, every night,
My, how I shake with fright,
Because my Dinah might,
Change her mind about me!

But if Dinah,
Ever wandered to China,

I would hop an ocean!,
Just to be with Dinah Lee!

Overall Meaning

The song "Dinah" by Eddie Cantor revolves around the singer's love for a woman, Dinah, whom he met in Carolina. He sings about how proud he is to have her in his life and how news of their upcoming wedding has spread. The singer cannot help but be enamored by Dinah's Dixie eyes and how he loves to sit and gaze into them. He is in constant worry that Dinah may change her mind about him every night, but he is willing to go to great lengths to be with her, even if it means hopping on an ocean liner to follow her to China.

The lyrics of the song evoke a sense of earnest love, with the singer expressing his admiration for Dinah's beauty and the lengths he is willing to go to be with her. The constant fear of losing her keeps him on edge and makes his love for her even more sincere. The chorus of the song, with its repetition of "Dinah, is there anyone finer in the state of Carolina?" is an ode to her beauty, and the singer urges anyone who knows of someone finer to show them to him.

Overall, the song "Dinah" is a romantic ballad expressing an intense and genuine love for a woman, with its catchy melody and heartfelt lyrics.

Eddie was quite a phenomenon in the nineteen twenties, headlining some of Ziegfeld's best shows, like the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927 and Makin' Whoopee! Oh, I forgot Kid Boots! He made that into a silent movie with Clara Bow. He wasn't afraid of a camera and made some great movies in the 1930s. He was a clever comic too. He lost everything in the 1929 stock market crash, but bounced back even a bigger name on radio! He had a long career and a great life! Thanks for posting this fine old song! Sounds like a clean 1940s radio transcription with a big swing band playing one of Eddie's old songs from the 1920s, "Dinah."
