I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do

He was just someone, someone I knew
I think about him on alternate Thursdays
When I haven't got anything better to do
He's got a problem if he thinks I need him
I couldn't care less now that we're through
I only sit home and I wait for his phone call
Wasn't I awfully smart not to fall and break my heart
He never meant a thing to me, he's gone
I'm glad, I'm free
And when he kissed me, no no he never moved me
Nothing fantastic, thrilling or new
So if I'm crying, I'm only crying
Cause I haven't got anything better
No I haven't got anything better
I haven't got anything better to do without you
I never loved him, no he never moved me
Nothing fantastic
This song by Eddie Fisher, entitled "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do," is a poignant depiction of a woman who is going through a difficult breakup with a man she never really loved. She recounts how he never really reached her and was just someone she knew. However, every other Thursday, she thinks about him, but only when she hasn't got anything better to do. Despite this, she acknowledges that he has a problem if he thinks she needs him, and she couldn't care less now that they're through.
The song then takes a somewhat ironic turn as the woman describes how she only sits at home and waits for his phone call, but this is only when she hasn't got anything better to do. She was smart not to fall for him and break her heart, but he never really meant anything to her. When he kissed her, nothing fantastic, thrilling or new happened, and so she is only crying because she hasn't got anything better to do without him.
The lyrics of this song speak to a sense of loneliness and emptiness that can come with a breakup. The woman in the song seems to be struggling to find meaning and purpose in her life without the man she was with, even though she acknowledges that she never really loved him. This may be a relatable experience for many people who have gone through breakups, as the absence of someone who was once a constant presence can leave a void that is difficult to fill.
