Tell Me Why
Eddie Fisher and Hugo Winterhalter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell me why, though I try to forget
Tell me why, why I think of you yet
I know I'll never be free
What has happened to me?

Tell me why, when we danced until three
Tell me why, why my heart couldn't see
I never dreamed of romance
Never gave it a chance

When I think of how you looked that day
In your gown of silk and lace
Should have known the day you came my way
That this was the time and the place

Tell me why I keep fooling my heart
When I know it was love from the start
Why don't we give it a try?
If you know, tell me why

Tell me why I keep fooling my heart
When I know it was love from the start
Why don't we give it a try?
If you know, tell me why

Tell me
Tell me why

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eddie Fisher and Hugo Winterhalter's song "Tell Me Why" tell the story of a person who cannot forget someone they once loved. They ask why they are still thinking of this person and why they cannot be free from these feelings. They reminisce about dancing until three in the morning with this person and how they never could have imagined a romance between them until that moment. The lyrics suggest that the person is fooling themselves by not admitting that their feelings for this person were love from the start, and they question why they don't give it a try and pursue a relationship.

The song's lyrics are relatable to anyone who has experienced a failed relationship and struggled to move on. They capture the pain of unrequited love and the difficult emotions that come with trying to forget someone. The lyrics also touch on the idea of missed opportunities and second chances, reminding the listener that sometimes it's worth taking a risk and giving love another try.

Great post. The 1950's gave us some marvellous songs, and Eddie Fisher gave us marvellous renditions of many of them. It is wonderful that we can still enjoy them via this medium, and by the largesse of people like you who grant us the privilege of doing so by posting these gems. Thank you for sharing.

... and thank you for sharing, Corrie121, a wonderful tribute to the music of Eddie Fisher's 1950s music. For me, his >I'm Yours< is one of the best recordings ever made.

Eddie said Hugo's arrangements were so striking and so magnificent people forgot he did the vocals!  He thought the records sounded like Winterhalter records Fisher as the guest vocalist.  But he sure like the big sales.
