Eddie Higgins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Not always what you seem
And though my heart may break when I awake
Let it be so
I only know, Ruby, it's you
They say, Ruby you're like a song
You don't know right from wrong
But from the start, who stole my heart?
Ruby, it's you
I hear your voice and I must come to you
I have no choice what else can I do?
They say, Ruby you're like a flame
Into my life you came
And though I should beware
Still I don't care you thrill me so
The lyrics to Eddie Higgins's song Ruby talk about the complexity of the titular character. The singer compares Ruby to a dream, someone who's not always what they appear to be. He acknowledges that his heart may break when reality sets in, but he's willing to take the risk because he only knows that Ruby is the one for him. The second verse continues this thought process, saying that Ruby is like a song, unaware of what's right or wrong. However, he sees the heart aches Ruby has for him and is taken in by her from the start. The singer hears her voice and has no choice but to come to her. The final verse describes Ruby as a flame, someone who came into his life and still thrills him, even though he should be wary.
The lyrics paint a picture of an interesting character in Ruby, who's not easily understood. It's evident that the singer is infatuated with her, but at the same time, he's aware that he should be careful. It's a classic portrayal of the struggle between the heart and the mind, with the singer ultimately following his heart in the end.
