Tom Dooley
Eddy Arnold Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hang down your head Tom Dooley hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head Tom Dooley poor boy you're bound to die

I met her on the mountain and there I took her life
I met her on the mountain and stubbed her with my knife

Hang down your head Tom Dooley
This time tomorrow reckon where I'll be
If it hadn't been for Grayson I'd've been in Tennessee

Hang down your head Tom Dooley

This time tomorrow reckon where I'll be
In some lonesome valley a hangin' on a white oak tree

Hang down your head Tom Dooley

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eddy Arnold's song Tom Dooley tell the story of a man, Tom Dooley, who has been sentenced to die for the murder of a woman. He is told to hang his head down and cry because he is going to die. Tom Dooley states that he met the woman on the mountain and took her life by stubbing her with his knife. He is then warned that he is bound to die, and he starts to contemplate where he'll be the next day, noting that if it hadn't been for Grayson, he'd have been in Tennessee. He repeats the line from earlier, saying that he'll be in some lonesome valley, hanging on a white oak tree.

The song Tom Dooley is based on the true story of the murder of a woman named Laura Foster in North Carolina in 1866. Tom Dula, whose name was changed to Dooley in the song, was a young Confederate veteran who was involved with two women: Laura Foster and Ann Melton. After Foster was found murdered, Dula and Melton were both arrested and put on trial. Dula was found guilty of the crime and was hanged on May 1st, 1868.
