Heavily influenced by American rock & roll, Mitchell (who went solo in 1963) has often recorded outside France, at first in London, but later in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Bob Graham were among the British session musicians who regularly supported him in London.

The lyrics of Eddy Mitchell's song "Après Minuit" depict the atmosphere and emotions experienced late at night, specifically after midnight. The opening line, "Après minuit, entre l'alcool et l'insomnie" (After midnight, between alcohol and insomnia), sets the tone for the rest of the song, highlighting the restless and introspective state of mind that often accompanies the late hours.
The second paragraph reflects the introspection that occurs during the late hours of the night. Mitchell sings about questioning the world and our own ambitions, suggesting that nighttime is a time for deep contemplation and self-reflection. The lyrics also allude to the notion that without us, the world would come to a standstill, emphasizing the importance of our existence and our ability to shape the world around us.
In the third paragraph, the focus shifts to the power of conversation after midnight. Mitchell sings, "Parler signifie être en vie" (To speak means to be alive). This line suggests that communicating and engaging with others during the late hours brings a sense of vitality, as if conversing has the power to truly make us feel alive. The reference to a girl at the bar becoming attractive further suggests that the late-night atmosphere can transform ordinary experiences.
The final paragraph echoes the themes of the previous paragraphs, emphasizing the questioning of the world and our ambitions, as well as the sentiment that the world would come to a halt without us. The line "Le sentiment se laisse aller" (The feeling lets go) represents the release and surrender of emotions that often occur after midnight, as the weight of the day fades away and we allow ourselves to be consumed by our emotions.
Overall, "Après Minuit" explores the complex emotions and introspection that occur in the late-night hours, highlighting the transformative power of conversation and the importance of our existence in shaping the world around us.
