Heavily influenced by American rock & roll, Mitchell (who went solo in 1963) has often recorded outside France, at first in London, but later in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Bob Graham were among the British session musicians who regularly supported him in London.

In Eddy Mitchell's song Je Lui Raconte Ma Vie, the singer is recounting their experience with death. They describe how when death came for them, they tried to reason with it and told it to go see if they were upstairs (in heaven). However, death merely smiled at them, and the singer realized that their time had come. The singer then recounts how they tried to do everything they could to earn a place in heaven, but it didn't seem to work. In frustration, they turned to gambling with Saint Peter and cheating their way to "winning." When they grew bored of eternal life, they then turned to selling their half-price soul to Satan to gain entry into Hell. Eventually, the singer is resurrected, and death becomes their close friend, and the singer follows death around with their lamp and sickle, carefree and without worries.
