Heavily influenced by American rock & roll, Mitchell (who went solo in 1963) has often recorded outside France, at first in London, but later in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Bob Graham were among the British session musicians who regularly supported him in London.

The lyrics of Eddy Mitchell's "Sur La Route 66" speak of regret and leaving behind the road and the life it represents. The singer expresses sincere regret to someone, telling them they are sorry they have to return to their troubles but that they cannot join them this time. The song then speaks of the famous Route 66, a once legendary road where blues was king and where one could find solo traveling singers and guitarists who lived outside the law and time, free and lost. The singer expresses the significance of Route 66, a road that crosses the country from north to south and east to west, a road full of mystique and magic. But as the song goes on, the singer implies that this road is no longer what it once was. It is now a deserted place, and only ghosts roam it. The past is lost, and so is the magic.
The song seems to be about the idea of losing something that was once magical and impactful, leaving it behind as time moves on, and that thing slowly fading away into obscurity. It can be interpreted as a lament for the loss of freedom and unbridled joy that one might have once found on the open road, and for the loss of a time when the road meant something special.
