Be Thou My Vision
Eden's Bridge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Be Thou my vision O Lord of my heart
Be all else but nought to me save that Thou Art
Be Thou my best thought in the day and the night
Both waking and sleeping Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true word
Be Thou ever with me and I with Thee Lord
Be Thou my great Father and I Thy true son
Be Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Be Thou my breastplate, my sword for the fight
Be Thou my whole armour, be Thou my true might
Be Thou my soul's shelter, be Thou my strong tower
O raise Thou me heav'nward, great power of my power

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise
Be Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Be Thou and Thou only the first in my heart
O Sov'reign of heaven, my treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, Thou heaven's bright sun
O grant me its joys after victory is won

Great heart of my own heart, whatever befalls
Still be Thou my vision, O ruler of all

Overall Meaning

The song "Be Thou My Vision" is a hymn that has been sung by Christians for centuries. The lyrics express the desire for God to be the sole focus, the primary source of guidance, and the greatest treasure in one's life. The song uses rich imagery to illustrate this desire for union with God. The first verse declares that God is to be the center of the singer's life, and that all other things are secondary. Without God, everything else is meaningless. The second verse asserts that God is not only the source of wisdom and truth, but also the loving presence that guides the singer throughout their life. God is a Father and the singer is his beloved child, who seeks to be one with Him in every way.

The third verse is perhaps the most vivid in its language, with the singer asking God to equip them for battle against the world's temptations and evils. They ask God to be their armor, their sword, and their shield. The singer recognizes their own weakness and vulnerability, and seeks God's protection from all harm. Finally, the fourth verse brings the song to a close with a reminder that all earthly riches and praises are nothing compared to the joy of being in God's presence. The singer asks God to grant them eternal life with Him, and to always be present in their heart, no matter what trials and tribulations they may face.

The 1st time I heard this song it was this version! When the words hit my ears my soul cried out "YES! YES! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT! FOR GOD TO BE MY EVERYTHING!!" And I fell in love with this song in that very moment. When I'm hit with hard times I sing this song & it points me to the One who holds everything in His hands & has everything under control & I am able to get through those hard times. Thank You, Jesus, for all You have done for me!

I know that scripture tells us to sing to the Lord a new song, but some hymns are simply timeless, this is certainly one. Very beautiful!

Amazing. I was an atheist until God saved me when I was 15 years old. I have no more fear in life - yes, I still have worries, doubts - but I don't have to fear anything because I know that no matter what happens God is with me always. No matter how bad things are, don't lose faith, and God will be waiting for us at the end of it all.

Love Eden's Bridge. When I first heard this version, I began to love this old hymn. It is so peaceful and full of adoration for our Lord Christ.

God really laid this hymn on my heart today... after a time of distance and seperation from God I was powerfully reminded by these words to keep looking to Him.

Marilee Alm

"The heart cannot hold the vision of Jesus, We need to keep looking. If we take our eyes off of Him we start decaying and we need to look again." Our life is in our looking. If Satan can take our looking, he can take our life. In other words, our constant fleshly need to be connected to the world has to go. Jesus has to take the place of worldly attentions or He has no place at all.
"When you relax you are testifying to the Lord that you cannot do it in your own strength."
And praise God! That is the best way to honor God, to hear Him, to get oil in our lamps for the future. Oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit. We are filled with someone as we pray. It is the Holy Spirit.

My father always sang this to me before he tucked me into bed. (-: I will do the same for my children.

Never thought of this hymn as a lullaby, what a great idea.
