O Come O Come Emmanuel
Eden's Bridge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times did'st give the Law,
In cloud, and majesty and awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eden's Bridge's song O Come, O Come, Emmanuel call out to the ancient figure of Emmanuel, who is believed to be the savior and deliverer of Israel. The lyrics invoke a sense of a suffering and captive Israel that is waiting for Emmanuel to come and free them from the tyranny of Satan, darkness, and death. The first stanza talks about how Israel is mourning and exiled in loneliness, and how they eagerly await the appearance of Emmanuel. It speaks of a promised hope that is yet to be fulfilled, signaling the longing of the human soul for a savior.

The second stanza is a plea to the "Rod of Jesse", which is another name for Jesus Christ, to save his people from the clutches of Satan and bring victory over death. The third stanza asks for the "Day-Spring" to come and dispel the darkness and shadows of night, bringing light and hope into the lives of the people. The fourth and the fifth stanza invoke the "Key of David" and the "Lord of Might" respectively to show the way to heaven, and fulfill the ancient law given by God to the tribes of Israel on the mount of Sinai. The song culminates in a message of hope, stating that Emmanuel will come and save Israel, and they shall rejoice in his presence.
