Satan Takes a Holiday
Edgar Hayes and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stop, look, and listen to me,
Last night at a quarter past three

The Devil started dancin'
He was entrancin'
hen he did the "Jangle: his own way
His bones were rattlin' loudly,
As he began to shuffle proudly,
That's the way that Satan takes a holiday

The music wasn't good,
But it was plenty spooky,
That 's the way he likes it night and day
the gentleman prefers to listen
To aggravatin' rhythm
That's the way Satan takes a holiday.

Watch out, He's comin' out,
And then you'll shout unless you're good, knock wood.
He's really rather goofy tryin' to be spooky,
But he has to do it day by day

His job is not allurin' never-the-less quite endurin'
Maybe that's why Satan takes a holiday

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Satan Takes a Holiday" by Edgar Hayes and His Orchestra are quite intriguing. The song is a clever exploration of the idea that even the devil needs a break from time to time. The opening verses implore the listener to pay attention as the singer recounts observing the devil dancing last night at a quarter past three. The devil's dance is described as both entrancing and loud, with his bones audibly rattling as he shuffles proudly. The lyrics suggest that this is the devil's form of taking a holiday.

The chorus of the song goes on to explain that although the music wasn't good, it was plenty spooky, and that's the way the devil likes it, night and day. The devil is described as preferring "aggravating rhythm," which suggests that the music and the way it's played is a key part of his holiday. The final verse warns the listener to "watch out" because the devil is "comin' out," and then "you'll shout unless you're good, knock wood." The devil is described as being rather goofy and trying to be spooky, but he has to do it day by day because his job is not alluring but quite enduring.

Overall, "Satan Takes a Holiday" is a fun and playful song that explores the concept of the devil taking a break from his usual duties. The lyrics are whimsical and lighthearted, making the listener smile and tapping their feet to the catchy rhythm.

@bill3murr Perhaps you mean Tommy Dorsey's band, I have it on Victor too. He makes a much faster and jazzy big band dance version. I think, this one is more sophisticated and matches better to these "devilish" guys in a slideshow presentation

barbcard

Scary! Quite a cast...I do wonder re BHO, but let's keep the politics sub rosa. Maybe Satan is swimming in oil?

@BOHEMIANMEX Yes, at first I included also a few VEEERY picturesque photographs of GB, but finally - considering a limited time for presentation - I decided I 'll focus only on those who have now political power. In some future clips I will have to come back to the subject and browse again through that loooong list of past demons, starting from GB and via Russian tzars to Kaligula :-))

Art Travesty

Hot DAMN! We finally got a rootin' tootin' missile shootin' Russkie in Russia again! Pass the Lord and praise the ammunition!

@tango3721 Thank you Lana! Let's hope this clip won't mean another warning for me from YT. If there are three, Big Brother kicks me out from game.
