In the late 1980s Brickell was the lead singer with the (now renamed) folk-rock group Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, whose 1988 debut album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars was a critical and commercial success. The band's follow-up album, Ghost of a Dog (1990), fared less well. As a solo artist, Brickell released Picture Perfect Morning (1994) and Volcano (2003). In 2006 she reunited with some of the original members of the New Bohemians and they released the Stranger Things album.
Brickell had a role as a folk singer in the 1989 film Born on the Fourth of July. Her version of Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is featured on the film's soundtrack. Many computer users know her from the "Good Times" video which was included as part of the multimedia samples on the Windows 95 installation CD-ROM.
Brickell married songwriter Paul Simon in 1992. They have three children.

But that sad look on your face was a challenge to my faith
Made me wanna chase the dark out of your room
So she smiled and said hello; little did she know
He would take hold of her soul and never never never let go
He was fine before he met her
Eyes like faded jeans, soft and blue and he had seen
Til he turned his gaze her way, longed to see it every day
Heard a voice inside him say you'll never never never be the same
Once in a while
Once in a blue moon
There comes somebody like you
They got fire and they got fever
He was more than fine; she was more than young
And the orange setting sun was beautiful
Ever so at ease, in the summer evening breeze
They would talk and they would tease
And never never never want to leave
Once in a while
Once in a blue moon
There comes somebody
There comes somebody like you
In the lyrics of Edie Brickell's "Once in a Blue Moon," the singer describes two people who find solace in each other's company. The song begins with the singer discussing how they noticed a sad look on someone's face that "was a challenge to my faith." Despite their initial attempt to mind their own business, the singer eventually decides to approach the person, and they form a relationship that is transformative for both of them. The second verse focuses on the man's life before he met the woman. He had "seen everything" and "had been everywhere," yet he was still searching for something. When he turned his gaze towards the woman, he knew he had found it. The final verse describes the couple's relationship as being both fiery and comfortable. They talk and tease one another with ease and never want to leave each other's company.
The song's lyrics are open to interpretation, but they seem to depict the idea of finding a true connection with someone in a world where hopelessness and sadness abound. The song suggests that even when life is tough, there is a rare chance that someone will come along who can help you face those challenges head-on. By depicting the relationship as transformative, the singer suggests that these encounters are rare but also worth pursuing. Overall, "Once in a Blue Moon" is an uplifting tribute to the power of human connection.

This has got to be my all time favorite song. I fell deeper in love with my fiancee than I thought I was. Edie Brickell doesn't get near the credit that she deserves for her contribution's to music.
