It took Edmond Hall a long period to develop his own musical individuality, but by the early '40s he had a very distinctive and dirty sound on the clarinet that was immediately recognizable within one note. One of four clarinet playing brothers (including Herbie Hall) who were the sons of early clarinetist Edward Hall, Edmond worked in many bands in New Orleans (including Buddy Petit's during 1921-1923) before going to New York in 1928 with Alonzo Ross. He was with Claude Hopkins' orchestra (1929-1935), doubling on baritone and only occasionally sounding like his future self on clarinet. Hall played with Lucky Millinder, Zutty Singleton, and Joe Sullivan, and had his style together by the time he joined Red Allen in 1940. He was with Teddy Wilson's sextet (1941-1944) and turned down an opportunity to be Barney Bigard's successor with Duke Ellington's Orchestra in 1942. In 1944, Hall began working with Eddie Condon (including appearances on his Town Hall Concert radio series), led his own group at Cafe Society, spent a few years based in Boston, and then during 1950-1955 was in the house band at Condon's club. Edmond Hall toured the world as a member of Louis Armstrong's All-Stars (1955-1958), worked in the 1960s now and then with Condon, and made his final recording (before his death from a heart attack) at John Hammond's 1967 Spirituals to Swing concert. He recorded as a leader for Blue Note (1941-1944), Commodore, Savoy, Storyville, United Artists, and some smaller labels.
The Man I Love
Edmond Hall Lyrics

Every night I dream a little dream,
And of course Prince Charming is the theme,
The he for me.
Although I realize as well as you
It is seldom that a dream comes true,
To me it's clear
That he'll appear.
Some day he'll come along,
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong,
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay.
He'll look at me and smile
I'll understand,
And in a little while,
He'll take my hand,
And though it seems absurd,
I know we both won't say a word
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe Monday, maybe not,
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two,
From which I'll never roam,
Who would, would you?
And so all else above
I'm waiting for the man I love.
The song The Man I Love is a romantic ballad that speaks of a woman's longing for the perfect man to come into her life. The song starts with the woman dreaming of meeting her Prince Charming every night. She understands that it's rare for dreams to come to reality, but she believes that one day, he will appear in front of her. She imagines him to be big and strong, and when he comes into her life, she will do her best to make him stay.
The woman believes that when he finally arrives, they will both know without saying a word that they belong together. She mentions that she might meet him on a Sunday or maybe not, but she's sure that one day, she'll meet him. He'll build her a little home meant for just the two of them, and she'll never leave it. At the end of the song, she conveys her undying love and affection for the man she's still waiting for with the hope that they'll be together soon.
Overall, the song is a timeless classic that talks about love and waiting for the perfect person to arrive in one's life. The lyrics are simple yet powerful, and the melody is soothing to the ears. It's a song that many people can resonate with as everyone has, at some point in their life, longed for their significant other.

When the mellow moon begins to beam,
At night when the soft light of the moon is shining,
Every night I dream a little dream,
Each night I have a little dream,
And of course Prince Charming is the theme,
And my dream always involves a prince charming,
The he for me.
A man who is perfect for me.
Although I realize as well as you
Although I know just as well as you do
It is seldom that a dream comes true,
That dreams don't often become reality,
To me it's clear
But I am convinced
That he'll appear.
That my prince charming will appear.
Some day he'll come along,
Eventually, he will come into my life
The man I love
The man I truly love
And he'll be big and strong,
He will be a tall and strong man,
And when he comes my way
When he comes towards me,
I'll do my best to make him stay.
I'll try my best to make him stay with me.
He'll look at me and smile
He'll gaze at me with a smile,
I'll understand,
I'll know what he's thinking
And in a little while,
And after a short time,
He'll take my hand,
He'll reach out and hold my hand,
And though it seems absurd,
And even though it may sound strange,
I know we both won't say a word
I know we won't say anything to each other - just be together in silence.
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday
Maybe I'll meet him on a Sunday,
Maybe Monday, maybe not,
Maybe I'll meet him on a Monday, or maybe not,
Still I'm sure to meet him one day
But I'm sure that I will meet him at some point in my life.
Maybe Tuesday will be my good news day
Maybe I'll receive some good news on a Tuesday - perhaps that I've finally met the man I love.
He'll build a little home
He'll create a small house for us,
Just meant for two,
As it will only be for the two of us,
From which I'll never roam,
And I'll never leave it,
Who would, would you?
Why would I - or anyone - leave a home like that?
And so all else above
And so, above all else,
I'm waiting for the man I love.
I'm patiently waiting for the man I truly love.

I return 3 years later, having again heard this piece on a recorded session of the marvelous late Phil Schaap's Traditions in Swing. This session featured Edmond Hall and this music! And I would say the same thing about it that I said before (without the typo!): "It doesn't get any more beautiful than this!" Thank you, David!

Glad you enjoyed it. I forgot I uploaded this piece! Let me know if you ever have any requests!
