Following a spell in London he began performing as a one-man-band playing guitar, harmonica, kazoo and kick drum. He shaped his character on Blues and Rock, fusing them with mediterranean elements.
His debut album called "Non farti cadere le braccia" was published in 1973. Over the next few years Bennato became one of the main Italian singer-songwriters for the counter-cultural youth movement, with songs which fused social protest with irony and sarcasm. "Burattino senza fili" (1978) which used Pinocchio's fable as a metaphor for Bennato's social commentary, introduced him to a more mainstream audience. His popularity was at its highest peak during a triumphal tour that included the St. Siro Stadium in Milan for an unforgettable concert in front of 70.000 people.
Nowadays he has 29 album published, and conuntered various collaborations: he performed with Bo Diddley, B.B. King and Jeff Healy. Still memorable are the great concerts at Hallenstadium in Zurich and at the Prater in Wien (1977), his partecipations at Montreux Jazz Festival (1987, 1992) and at the Apollo Theatre in New York City (1987) and the monogram of the Championship 1990 "Un'estate Italiana", sung with Gianna Nannini, which remained in hit parade for four months and went all around the world.
Still performing succesfully on stage with his new songs , he's also engaged in a new theatrical production: the Italian musical Peter Pan. The soundtrack of the Italian version is totally composed by Edoardo Bennato's lyrics, taken from his concept album "Sono solo canzonette" a musical transcription of the tale of Peter Pan which is going to be translated into English.

Edoardo Bennato Lyrics

Sveglia!... tutti a rapporto da me!
Spugna!!! Pendaglio da forca!
... possibile che nessuno si muova?!
... ma sono o no il comandante
di questa lurida nave?!...
di questa lurida nave?!
Sono o non sono il Capitan Uncino, ah?
lasciate tutto e correte
e fate presto perché
chi arriva tardi lo sbrano!
Avanti chi mi dà
notizie di Peter Pan?
Lo voglio vivo però
quando lo acchiappo non so
che cosa gli farò.
Si prende gioco di me
e fa il gradasso perché
quei branchi di mocciosi
lo stanno ad ascoltare
lo credono un eroe!
Ma è solo un qualunquista
un esibizionista
di tutti i miei nemici
è il più pericoloso
è il primo della lista.
Ma a voi vi sembra giusto
durante un duello
ha preso la mia mano
l'ha data in pasto a quel
dannato coccodrillo!
Ma non la passa liscia
gliela farò pagare
con le mie stesse mani,
anzi, col mio uncino
io lo dovrò scannare!
Eccolo, in vista!... E' lui con tutta la banda!
Meglio!... che questa volta si arrenda!...
Non voglio prigionieri!...
mi basta solo un ostaggio!
... la ragione è dalla vostra parte
ricordatevelo!...
Avanti all'arrembaggio,
... avanti all'arrembaggio!
Sono o non sono il Capitan Uncino, ah?
e allora avanti col coro!
Cantate tutti con me
e ripetete con me
gli slogan che vi ho insegnato!
Veri pirati noi siam!
Contro il sistema lottiam!
Ci esercitiamo a scuola
a far la faccia dura
per fare più paura!
Ma cosa c'è di male?
Ma cosa c'è di strano?
Facciamo un gran casino
ma in fondo lavoriam
per Capitan Uncino!...
Io sono il professore
della rivoluzione!
della pirateria
io sono la teoria
il faro illuminante!
Ma lo capite o no?
Ve lo rispiegherò!
Per scuotere la gente
non bastano i discorsi
ci vogliono le bombe!
Io ero un benestante,
non mi mancava niente,
ma i soldi di papà
li spendo tutti qua
a combattere sul fronte!
Chi si arruolerà
un bel tatuaggio avrà!
Ma da quel trampolino
io chi non vuol firmare
lo sbatto giù nel mare!...
...Si batte la fiacca, eh?
Io mi sacrifico per voi
e questo è il vostro ringraziamento?
Veri pirati noi siam!
Contro il sistema lottiam!
Ci esercitiamo a scuola
a far la faccia dura
per fare più paura!
Ma cosa c'è di male?
Ma cosa c'è di strano?
Facciamo un gran casino
ma in fondo lavoriam
per Capitan Uncino!...
The lyrics of "Il rock di Capitan Uncino" are a humorous and ironic take on the character of Captain Hook from Peter Pan. In the song, Edoardo Bennato portrays Captain Hook as a delusional and megalomaniacal leader, who is obsessed with catching Peter Pan and proving his superiority over him. Throughout the song, he addresses his crew, demanding their obedience and urging them to follow him in his mission.
The lyrics also criticize the concept of revolution and rebellion, depicting it as a hollow and superficial pursuit. The chorus, "Veri pirati noi siam! Contro il sistema lottiam! Ci esercitiamo a scuola a far la faccia dura per fare più paura!", suggests that the rebellious attitude of the crew is nothing but an act, and that they are ultimately working towards the benefit of Captain Hook, who is portrayed as a hypocritical and unstable leader.
The song also contains several references to the story of Peter Pan, such as Captain Hook's missing hand, which was eaten by the crocodile that pursues him, and his rivalry with Peter. Overall, the song is a lighthearted critique of the concept of rebellion and the romanticization of pirate culture.

Ciurma!... questo silenzio cos'è?!

... possibile che nessuno si muova?!
...is it possible that no one is moving?!

...am I or am I not the commander

Sono o non sono il Capitan Uncino, ah?
Am I or am I not Captain Hook, huh?
e allora quando vi chiamo

So when I call for you,

And do it fast because
whoever arrives late will be torn to shreds!

Who has news on Peter Pan?
Lo voglio vivo però

I want him alive, but when I catch him,

Si prende gioco di me

quei branchi di mocciosi

He makes fun of me

those groups of brats
are listening to him and
believing him to be a hero!
Ma è solo un qualunquista

But he's just a nobody
a show-off
of all my enemies,
he's the most dangerous
and at the top of my list.
Ma a voi vi sembra giusto
durante un duello
ha preso la mia mano
l'ha data in pasto a quel
dannato coccodrillo!
But does it seem right to you
that during a duel
he took my hand
and fed it to that
damned crocodile!
Ma non la passa liscia
gliela farò pagare
con le mie stesse mani,
anzi, col mio uncino
io lo dovrò scannare!
But he won't get away with it,
I'll make him pay for it
with my own hands
or rather, with my hook,
I'll have to kill him!
Eccolo, in vista!... E' lui con tutta la banda!
There he is, in sight!... He's with his entire gang!
Meglio!... che questa volta si arrenda!...
Good!... this time he should surrender!...
Non voglio prigionieri!...
mi basta solo un ostaggio!
I don't want prisoners!...
I just need a hostage!
... la ragione è dalla vostra parte

So keep the chorus going!
Everyone sing with me
and repeat after me
the slogans I've taught you!
Veri pirati noi siam!
Contro il sistema lottiam!
Ci esercitiamo a scuola
a far la faccia dura
per fare più paura!
We are true pirates!
We fight against the system!
We practice at school
making a tough face
to scare others more!
Ma cosa c'è di male?
Ma cosa c'è di strano?
Facciamo un gran casino
ma in fondo lavoriam
per Capitan Uncino!...
But what's wrong with that?
What's so strange about it?
We make a big mess,
but in the end, we work
for Captain Hook!...
Io sono il professore
della rivoluzione!
della pirateria
io sono la teoria
il faro illuminante!
I am the professor
of revolution!
Of piracy,
I am the theory and
the guiding light!
Ma lo capite o no?
Ve lo rispiegherò!
Per scuotere la gente
non bastano i discorsi
ci vogliono le bombe!
But can't you see it?
I'll explain it again!
To shake people up
talk isn't enough,
we need bombs!
Io ero un benestante,
non mi mancava niente,
ma i soldi di papà
li spendo tutti qua
a combattere sul fronte!
I was well off,
I didn't lack anything,
but my daddy's money
I spend it all here
to fight on the front!
Chi si arruolerà
un bel tatuaggio avrà!
Whoever enlists
will have a nice tattoo!
Ma da quel trampolino
io chi non vuol firmare
lo sbatto giù nel mare!...
But from that diving board
whoever doesn't want to sign
I throw them into the sea!...
...Si batte la fiacca, eh?

I sacrifice myself for you
and this is your gratitude?
