In december of 1999 the band got the formation it has today: Pelle sings, Filip Carvell plays the acoustic and the electric guitar and sings, Helena Söderman plays the flute, melodica, harmonica, glockenspiel, Wurlitzer and sings, Mårten Josjö plays the electric guitar, Mats Deltin plays the bass and Ulf Lundberg the drums.
In 1999 Edson made about 30 live appearances, e.g. one at the demo stage of the Hultsfred festival in Sweden. After the performance Edson met John Cloud, who was interested in releasing something on his label Stormstreet records. In September a four-track EP was released containing the songs Sunday, Lovely Sunday, I Didn´t Mean to be Mean, 22:22 {We Need a Quarrel, We Need a Fight} and Terry Whips.
The same year the band contributed with two songs on the compilation CD The Sound of Young Sweden and with one song each on Sound Affects Magazine's »Hultsfred special-CD« and the »Demoscenen«-CD of the Hultsfred festival. The Sunday, lovely sunday EP was also released by Matinée Recordings in the US, but with a slightly different tracklist.
In the autumn of -00 Edson was signed to Summersound Recordings and recorded their debut album Unwind with edson, which was released February 14 2001 and was received well.
Album number two, For Strength, was recorded and mixed during ten intensive days in the end of December of 2001, once again with Andreas Ahlenius as technician and once again mainly in the rock metropolis of Gävle, Sweden. The result is very satisfactory. Edson has evolved as a unity, and their sound is more homogenous and personal.

Before I Was Smart
Edson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What it's like to be surreal
Sticky, stingy, stiff and pale
Wonder how I got so quail
They might save a lie
Or a fiendish why
In a time where the things we do scare me
Stupid and na've
In a time I remember just barely
Before I was smart
On a train to my old town
Putting on a scornful frown
In this town I used to sing
Sing about most anything
They might save a lie
Or a fiendish why
In a time wher e the things we do scare me
I preferred to be
Stupid and na've
In a time I remember just barely
Before I was smart
In Edson's song "Before I Was Smart", the lyrics open with a plea for a return to a time when the singer could experience surrealism and the feeling of being disconnected from the reality of their life. The use of the words "sticky, stingy, stiff and pale" recall images of being stuck in one's own body and unable to escape a situation. The line "Wonder how I got so quail" adds to this notion that the singer has become trapped in their own existence and needs to be taken out of their current life to feel alive again.
The next lines "They might save a lie or a fiendish why" suggests that the complexities of life have become too much for the singer who preferred to be "Stupid and na've" before he became "smart". There is a sense of regret and longing for a time when life was simpler and less complicated. The repetition of the phrase "In a time I remember just barely" emphasizes that this longing is for a time long gone and is almost out of reach.
In the final stanza, the singer looks back on a train journey to their old town where they used to sing about "most anything". The verse suggests that the singer used to be more carefree and open-minded in the past, again emphasizing the nostalgia that permeates the song. Overall, the song paints a picture of a world that's lost to the singer, just out of reach, and leaves the listener wondering what regrets they will have when their own childlike naivety fades away.
