In december of 1999 the band got the formation it has today: Pelle sings, Filip Carvell plays the acoustic and the electric guitar and sings, Helena Söderman plays the flute, melodica, harmonica, glockenspiel, Wurlitzer and sings, Mårten Josjö plays the electric guitar, Mats Deltin plays the bass and Ulf Lundberg the drums.
In 1999 Edson made about 30 live appearances, e.g. one at the demo stage of the Hultsfred festival in Sweden. After the performance Edson met John Cloud, who was interested in releasing something on his label Stormstreet records. In September a four-track EP was released containing the songs Sunday, Lovely Sunday, I Didn´t Mean to be Mean, 22:22 {We Need a Quarrel, We Need a Fight} and Terry Whips.
The same year the band contributed with two songs on the compilation CD The Sound of Young Sweden and with one song each on Sound Affects Magazine's »Hultsfred special-CD« and the »Demoscenen«-CD of the Hultsfred festival. The Sunday, lovely sunday EP was also released by Matinée Recordings in the US, but with a slightly different tracklist.
In the autumn of -00 Edson was signed to Summersound Recordings and recorded their debut album Unwind with edson, which was released February 14 2001 and was received well.
Album number two, For Strength, was recorded and mixed during ten intensive days in the end of December of 2001, once again with Andreas Ahlenius as technician and once again mainly in the rock metropolis of Gävle, Sweden. The result is very satisfactory. Edson has evolved as a unity, and their sound is more homogenous and personal.

Nearly Took Up Smoking
Edson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
A lighthouse on your sea
But when we're on the phone
You always sink
Happy as can be
And then you talk to me
I drag you down
Before you even blink
Then it's: Over, over and out
And suddenly we talk about
The most stupid, shallow things
And all because of what my temper brings
I would like to do
Exciting things for you
I nearly took up smoking
Just to be
Elegantly rash
Vigorous and brash
Of course I ended up
With smoker's allergy
Then it's: Over, over and out
And suddenly we talk about
The most stupid, shallow things
And all because of what my temper brings
It's hard to be kind; it's all about pride
And I am only sweet when I drink
It's hard to be kind; it's all about pride
And I am only sweet when I drink
The song "Nearly Took Up Smoking" by Edson explores the singer's desire to be a beacon of light for somebody they care about, but in contrast, end up dragging them down. In the first verse, the singer compares themselves to a lighthouse, which is a strong and steady guide to sailors on the sea. However, when they speak on the phone, they bring the other person down with their negative attitude, causing them to sink. The second verse reveals the singer's self-awareness of their behavior and how it affects their relationship. Despite wanting to do exciting things for their loved one, they feel limited by their own flaws and nearly took up smoking to appear more daring.
The chorus repeats the phrase "over, over and out," which is a phrase commonly used in military and aviation communication when ending a conversation. It indicates that communication has ceased, and the singer is signaling that they are done speaking. The line "all because of what my temper brings" highlights the singer's struggles with their short-tempered nature and how it causes them to talk about shallow topics with their loved one.
The refrain "it's hard to be kind, it's all about pride, and I am only sweet when I drink" reflects on the singer's struggle with showing kindness, which they attribute to their pride. They also admit that they can only be affectionate when they have alcohol in their system, which suggests that they struggle with vulnerability and intimacy. Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on the complexities of relationships and the challenges of personal growth.
