Such a beautiful sorrowness about the melody.

This lovely piece was one of two which followed the Grieg Piano Concerto on an LP which my parents bought in the 1960s. The pianist was Eileen Joyce. The 'delay', which I recall she also employed, only really happens in bar 9 and its 'equivalents', where the arpeggiando would appear to imply it. Strictly speaking, the rubato should be compensated for later in the phrase, but a flexible rhythm is in keeping with the romantic idiom, I feel. The music must be allowed to 'breathe'. I aspire to play the piece as beautifully as this.

This piece puts me in mind of the weather I had a couple of days ago - a cloudy day with rain on and off, then when that Picardy third kicks in at the end (the piece ends in the A double harmonic major scale), it continues raining but the sun gets out and we get a stunning sunset.

@ViRrOorR

this makes me think of a lonely boat at sea during a rainy day. Sometimes the sun shines but its mostly rough waters.

@tropicalpimp

i wish this was longer...still amazing.

Thank you Pandora, for introducing me to the Romantic-Era ingenuity of Edvard Grieg.
