A great discovery! Wonderful music, strange that it is so little known. Thank you for including the score!

Which is why we come on Bartje Bartmans channel to discover these gems. I notice its played by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, one of many quality regional orchestras. Nice music.

This is Grieg's greatest work.

Frans Meersman

Thankyou for introducing me to this never heard beautiful music.

The orchestra I am part of would have performed this in spring 2020 if not for the pandemic. Such beautiful music, it is a shame we were unable to perform it. I love the intensity of the beginning of the 4th movement!

Jorge Aguirre

ALL OF THE 4th! My favourite!

Fulvio Polce

È un ottima composizione, molto simile alle Danze Slave di Dvorak, anche se più compatte.
Grazie Bartje per l'ottimo caricamento e consulenza.

Joshua Ward

Very similar indeed! I found Dvorak and Greig together and were the soundtrack to a lot of my teens.

In the old "Record Guide", published in the UK in 1950, the scoring of these dances was called "noisy and vacuous" by the editors. But the second dance merited "sinuous and haunting", so it wasn't all bad :-)

You can hear the "noisy and vacuous" recording they complained about (the LSO with Piero Coppola in 1946) here: https://charm.cch.kcl.ac.uk/audio/flac/AK_1869_AR_10443-2.flac

Some of the scoring IS very thick which makes me wonder if Grieg was expecting a smaller orchestra than usually plays it.

Later, in 1968, the BBC used A major melody from the last movement for a TV adaptation of "The Railway Children", and it did haunt many of our childhoods. When the feature film appeared two years later, I always thought the producers missed a trick by not using Grieg's lovely music.
